Anti clockwise...original factory manuals misprinted the direction and then the Haynes manual picked up the "misprint".
Ask me how I know.
I did have to buy a new one because that ring would not budge either way. After the punch and hammer failed I ended up using a dremel and a torch.

Do you mean "anti-clockwise to loosen" ?
I remember the factory manual for Triumph 650s in the late 60's had a pic of the primary with the cover off. They had reversed the negative, so it was backasswards. Clymer who always said that they did not just copy the factory manuals, and did all their own research, also had the picture reversed.

Sorry for the confusion...turning the four holed ring anti-clockwise to loosen is correct
