Does anyone know the thread size for rider footpegs on a 71 750 commando? Couldn't you just go to the local nut and bolt shop and get a couple of stainless steel bolts and use them as footpegs?
I believe the thread is 7/16-20 UNF on 72 and on…not sure of earlier Commandos. At least this Tap passes through my footrest castings.
I have made my own. Start with 5/8 shaft bar stock 3.5" long from the end to threaded section. Threaded section is 1.5" long 7/16-20UNF.
This length screws all the way through the casting and a nut is fastened on the other side. The Footrest casting should be threaded. This size is not common in most hardware stores you will have to go to a proper Fastener Company most likely.
If you do not have a Lathe or a Buddy that does the price for new ones will not justify the agro. Buy what you need and buy a spare with the nuts. Any Norton supplier will have these items in stock.
You Know Murphy’s Law.... if you have a spare you will never have to need it.
I have repaired castings that P/O ingenuity did (or undid depending on your point of view) by drilling out the Footrest to allow a 5/8 bolt to pass through with a nut on either side, then lopping off the head of the bolt. This is acceptable for a Ford-Ferguson Tractor not a Norton. IMO
CNN
I done the same as above 7/16 unf,but put the lock nut on the on the out side, rubber side, leaving the thread flush and tidy,it also less likly to punt a hole in your cases if it falls over.
Footpeg is welded into the peg mount on '68-'70. Screw in pegs from '71 or '72-'74 are all the same. In '75 they tapered the peg as it goes into the peg mount. Thread forms are all the same, 7/16-20.
I was thinking of getting some fancy schmancy foot pegs machined for the MKIII with that taper. Knurled stainless or aluminum perhaps. I'd look into getting a few sets made if there was interest from others as paying for a single one-off set may be pricey. I'll look into it regardless.
I've made a few pegs and thought it was 7/16" UNF but on checking in the Commando Service Notes the sketch on page 27 shows 3/8" UNF :? . Should have read the text the sketch is for a repair on the earlier brazed pegs.
Sorry.
