Hi All,

after a couple of false starts I'm coming to visit my son in Philadelphia( from Perth West Australia) in September. As part of the deal I'm hiring a Triumph from Bird in Hand near Lancaster. Any suggestions on nice roads in that area.. I will have 4 days. Thought maybe across to Ligonier and then south? to meet up with route 50 back over the mountains?. Looking for some nice roads, nice quiet, off the main roads towns..couple of bars !.... any help appreciated

Hi Conky -

Either north or south of there should be good riding country with not very many big towns. I live about an hour north of Philly in Upper Black Eddy, PA. I work in Glenside or really, North Hills, PA which is very close to the northern border of Philly. If you have time it would be great meet up with you and do some riding. Or at least a meet for a quick lunch during the week. Are you looking to do some day trips or something more extended? I can pretty much get off work when needed with enough notice. I've accumulated way too much vacation time (36 vacation days plus 5 days left on sick and personal time too) that they want me to use up. I think I've been here way too long!

One time Car and Driver magazine published an issue with the best scenic drives in all parts of the country and it included U.S. Highway 6 in Pennsylvania. If I was going to spend four days in Pennsylvania I would get on it and drive in one direction for two days then turn around and go back the other way for two days, lots of little hotels, Inns and places to eat, and lots of twisty and hilly two-lane blacktop through forests, farm and small towns. I have been in Pennsylvania for 50 years and I think it is well worth looking at if you want to get away from the big city, Here:

You might want to have a go on the "Old Mine Road" on the eastern bank of the Delaware in New Jersey.

It is the last exit going west on Interstate 80 (I80) leaving New Jersey and head north. Going North on the road maybe 15 miles or so turn off for Flatbrookville and get lost or stay on the road and head up to Dingmans Ferry or look for Peters Valley before Dingmans Ferry. This would make a nice day trip.
