Hi All,
I'm new to the Norton owners community since a '73 850 roadster followed me home last month, (to join a garage full of other classic old British bikes...) The bike is beautifully restored but has knock-off copies with bubbled chrome for silencers. :?
I'd like to hear any suggestions you have for quality replacement items, and/or suppliers, with attention both to quality of finish and sound quality. I really want to trade the "glass-pack" sound for the wonderful Norton low-note rumble of the originals. All my bikes are riders and "The Sound they make" is an essential aspect of the classic bike experience, I'm sure most would agree.
I've enjoyed reading this very informative forum and will appreciate all your comments.

Thank You!

Hi Lars,

I've likely silencers (mufflers) supplied by Toga. Phil Radford at Fair Spares America used to supply these.
Not sure what you mean in difference between orginal and "glass pack". You can shoot a bullet through the originals and not hit anything, unless you refer to the black cap type.

Get the kind that have the smooth tapper to the header OD and have triangle center tube baffle with the cresent shaped louvers openings facing backwards and not screens in gas path. Would be a fun project to request a photo down the various silencers so we could develop and sonic chart to pick and choose from. Nortons should sound bigger than they look but not obnoxious to talk over up close.
The factory Peashooters were famouns for a twitting sound on run over.

I purchased Commando Specialties seamless peashooters almost 3 years ago and can't say enough about them. The fit is perfect...their sound is awesome...the finish is top notch / still mirror finish...finish stays perfect with a periodic shining w/ Turtle Wax Chrome Cleaner...the seamless look is much better than the welded seams....no hint of cracks at the muffler/header junction...and, best of all, the price is right.

I've been waiting for a few reviews on these. Can anyone comment on thier pipes? I understand they're US made. Thanks.

I have an MKIIA '74 and also got the Commando Specialties headers and peashooters. Love them. I also like the fact that they are non crossover. My previous(original) pipes cracked at the crossover joint. If you go this route, get the deeper 750 style exhaust nuts.

I never looked into it deep but my commando specialties standard peashooters came in boxes with "taiwan" on them. I dont know if they repurposed the boxes but that was on there.

The fit and finish is excellent on them. I am totally won over on the quality and fittment of the pipes. But I did have to mention that the boxes had taiwan on them. Maybe the boxes were made in taiwan :)

Thanks all,

I will soon break out the debit card and pull the trigger. Hope to have this bike ride and show-ready for the annual Clubman Show in San Jose next month. It is done in the original Fire-flake Bronze orange so it will be easy to spot...

Lars
