I am looking for a replacement speedo for my 961, it works except for the backlight so is invisible at night.
Does anyone have experience or thoughts on the Smiths one linked below?

Have also seen Motogadget but they are a bit pricey.

Good question, i hadn't give the original supplier a thought as the factory ones seem a bit cheap plasticy.
Will check them out though.

I had the same problem. Spoke with Rob Jameson and he informed me it was a sealed unit so would have to be changed. Asked for that recently under warantee and someone there then realised that I had probably lowered the illumination level myself by pressing the button in the wrong sequence. It was probably when I tried to reset the time and I was just pressing and holding and hadn't a clue. page 113-114 in the small booklet is where you should find your answwer so I was told. Mine is fine now

Just looked at the book but not very clear but guessing you just scroll through options and illumination comes up ( i recall Marie from service saying).

Thanks I’ll check that out. That sort of unintended technical excellence is right up my alley.

Congratulations to Welshrugby, i had the same feedback from Rob J so hadn't investigated further.
Just had a play and if you turn the key on then hold the toggle switch down for a couple of seconds ILL shows up, then short prods on the button scrolls through 0 - 9. At 5 hey presto i have a speedo backlight again. I like a cheap fix.

If by small book you mean the Owners Handbook, pages 113 and 114 in mine are blank. I guess they added to it over time.

Bloody Marvelous, the pages were not that clear but now you have cracked it, simple pleasures eh

Seriously though? No accessible LED on the unit. That is absurd. Thanks for the #5 alive tip tough.

I have had look on the VDO website for a data sheet, found one with what looks to be the right functions but is for a different unit.
Have now left a note on their contact page, will post here if they get back with anything useful.
