Repair Petcock?

I like the OEM petcocks on my 75, but one has broken the plastic cone valve.
Are parts available to replace the broken part?

I've never seen any spares, and even if you were lucky enough to find a replacement it would probably only last a few weeks before it broke.
 
Some of the earlier petcocks had a brass insert instead of plastic. I'd be searching for some where I wanting to rebuild. I might have one lost in the rubble on my bench. I will look around, if so it is yours as I know I am not going to use it.

Thanks LAB for those great links. It's good to know I can buy them if I have to. I hope to have mine finished tomorrow and see if it works.

In the US DomiRacer has some, 95-832800 or 95-604512, but I have no information on them, they may be the rubber type which swell up and don't work. I've been meaning to call them.

Success: I got my valve plug made and installed and it works good.
Seals off good and operates much more smoothly.
I used solid Teflon for the plug.

Nice effort. I hope it holds up for you for a long time. Nothing better than to fab something up and make it work! (Especially if it's a bike part!)
 
OK, I'll be the Grinch.

Ever see a picture of a burning Norton?

Now, think of that inside your garage.

Now, think of the garage being attached to your house.

Now, think of your body, maybe asleep inside the house, next to the garage.

There are a million things you can experiment on with a Norton. The fuel delivery lines are not one of them!

Sorry, every once in a while, the lifeguard in me comes out.
 
Have you checked them for leakage JD? You better check your float needles too and not end up with an engine full of fuel. We don't need no stinkin' fires.

Of course I checked them, how do you think I made them fit? I rigged up a vacuum system that sucked on the outlet end. I would be much more concerned about the 40 year old nylon valves than new ones made out of Teflon. You are the guys who should be worried, not me.

I'm not, just look at the response in my Alloy 850 build thread when I built an aluminum Commando swingarm. You would have thought the world was going to end.

Your solution looks great. I had a pile of broken petcocks laying around at one point, and I was going to make those out of brass. I sold the lot before I had a chance to try.
 
I think there would be a demand for these Teflon based fuel tap parts.
The Teflon probably will shape itself to the tap body taper to make a good seal.

All of the nylon ones from the Mark 3s broke after age and fuel hardened.

These should be a direct replacement for the earlier brass parts also.
I've tried to lap in old brass bodies and valves without much success.
The BAP types work great (NO drips) but maybe check the rubber gasket over time for any effects from ethanol based fuel.

Note that the 'plastic' and brass cones are not directly interchangeable, the brass cone is longer and the corresponding recess in the tap body is deeper, so any plastic/teflon cones made to replace brass items would need to suit the brass cone tap.

Once upon a time, people trusted things they made more than things they bought. The 20th century brought about amazing changes but one of the saddest was the perception the home-made was inferior. I would be concerned about the 40 year old valves too. Good job.
