remove intermediate shaft

I got the ikea norton stripped down this far, buthaven't seen any description on the removal of the Intermediate shaft. i can turn it with great effort its not a thread... i think

also the triangular disk on the crank, i've tried lifting it (using a dental pick) but can't seem to make it slide up (broke the dental pick)

suggestion please..

do i just push the intermediate shaft out from the back side once i have the cases separated?

Ye need the 3 prong puller as seen in these images that about all shops carry and may be able to tag up off an image site or make me an offer I can not refuse to be ride of a spare one. Its a neat gizmo Norton came up with and works a treat every time for me though some have trouble getting jaws to grip.

I'm not sure why you want to remove the intermediate shaft, but if you heat up the cases it should come out quite easily, It is just pressed in, no thead. Regarding the triangular washer, have you removed the woodruff key from the crank? The triangular washer is simply a spacer to allow the puller to remove the pinion, it should just slide on and off, have you tried a magnet?

Ugh missed that the cogs were already off but agree why in the world remove something in thin wall cases lowering its stability when best practice requires a special back up support just to tighten cam nut against it or risk tipping it out of its bore. If already loose may have to ping comnoz on how to save but otherwise could be show stopper on that case half. Super magnets are my pullers of choice on this sort of item.

it late and hot and i had a daa moment, yeah after i got the key out the triangular wash just slips out easy. the case needs to go out for a pressure wash an hopefully i can get soda blaster clean or walnut shell blasted, i will mic the shaft to verify that it is still round, has some wear on one side

dial indicator says crank has 0.016" end float and cam is 0.026"

If the intermediate shaft is not loose, don't mess with it. Just tape it off if you are concerned.

Also, make sure the oil feed hole points down.

I had a cylinder head vapor blasted a few months ago. Came out looking great. You would have thought that in a area as big as DFW there would be a place that does that. I couldn't find one but did use Vapor Blast Solutions in Santa Fe. They advertise in the Norton News and I try and support those who support us.
