Reg/rec or alternator problems.

Went out for a ride yesterday on my 2013 Norton commando sport, stopped at a local beauty spot to admire the view (and have a fag) and when I turned the ignition back on there was no power, no lights or clocks and, obviously, it wouldn't start. Called for breakdown/recovery assistance and a very nice chap turned up 2 hours later. He had a go at finding the problem and seemed to think it could be either the reg/rec or the alternator. Now, I'm no electrician but when I pointed to the reg/reg (behind the starter motor) he said that was part of the ECU so not sure if his advice is solid.
So if any of you fine chaps out there have come across this problem then i would greatly appreciate some advice before I delve in any further.
The battery is good and always on a charger. I also have a manual.
Cheers, Chris.

Stopped at a beauty spot to have a fag eh?

Our American cousins will have a ‘colourful’ mental image of that...!
Jumbo fuses under the tank can work loose,
Secure with a tie wrap, battery lead fault.
Something to start with,
Let us know what the problem was.
The you can relax and have another fag!!!

You can start at the fuse box and work back . You might have to remove the gas tank and do what MAK said (check that main fuse 30A). The finned unit behind the starter is your rectifier/regulator . I think the pick up driver is assuming that you ran the battery flat because of a bad alternator/regulator/rectifier. You should have 12 volts to ground at the N - P fuse if the 30A fuse is good and the battery is not flat. This also feeds the built in battery charger plug at the L/H top shock bolt boss. If you don't have 12 V here then the tank comes off etc..

Agree with jumbo Fuse problem heat causes expansion of the outer part I think needs crimping and forcing together with plastic tie.

Fuses and relays often vibrate out. Much more fun on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of nowhere, well Holland anyway.

Thanks Mak, TonyA and all. Problem was found to be the 30amp main fuse under the tank (so easy to remove tank....not) which I replaced. Can't believe Norton put the fuse in such a kin stupid place so I will move it to make it easier to replace in the future.
Thanks again and now I'm going to have a tobacco related product .
