In refrencing the parts book and workshop manual on rebuilding a '74 850 commando head, I was a little surprised the rocker spring # NM18103 does not have a thrust washer between it and the side of the head. I would think this would wear into the alum head. I am tempted to just put a washer between the spring and the head on all four of the rockers. As long as the rocker aligns well with the valve I wouldn't think I would have a problem I am wondering if others have run into this on their rebuilds. Thanks

I got rid of the rocker shaft springs and shimmed the rockers to center them perfectly over the valve stem. A little noisier, but with loud pipes, you can't even tell.

I haven' seen a problem with the spring wearing into the aluminum, but then a hardened washer wouldn't hurt.
I have seen the washer left out on the other side and seen the rocker worn deep into the aluminum. Jim
