I have a '74 Daytona that needs some transmission work. The roller bearing in the kickstart was bad, so I replaced that, but things are still not right. When I drained the oil it was full of brass glitter. What parts generally go bad or need to be given a hard look when rebuilding theses gearboxes ? Any general tips, tricks, and advice for these would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Greg

There are several bronze bushings in the tranny. Do you have a parts book? They are available free online at Big D Cycle

I do have the parts book, but I have not done hardly anything with Triumphs so I don't know the weak spots.

There is a small bushing in the main shaft on the timing side that the clutch rod slips throu, two thrust washers (one each end of lay shaft) and a couple of inner bushings on several gears; all can wear out. Also, the shifter camp late tracks can wallow out and of course teeth and dogs can wear, chip and break

I think the C range boxes only have one bronze lay shaft thrust washer?
But as GP advised, inspect the bronze bushes, especially the sleeve gear bush, the main shaft runs in.

The only weak point in a 500's gearbox is that little spring and ball that go into the kick starter pawl. Years ago my machinist pal made a modification to that ball and sping deal, but I don't recall what we did,and we haven't had problem since....sorry
