Hi

I shall rebuild the girbox on my MK3.
I am going to switch the layshafts inner bearing. It will be replased with a new upgraded super blend.
My question is, which bearing What ID / size, type ?
It is said that it is a good idea

The roller bearing upgrade is NJ 203E.C3
(sold as AN part 06-7710).

An alternative is the special FAG 6203 TB P63 ball bearing recommended by Mick Hemmings.

Andover Norton sells a kit (2 actually) that includes, virtually, all the gaskets, seals, bushings, springs and bearings. One kit for Mk3, one kit for pre-Mk3. Makes the G/B rebuild a lot easier.

Not so many pitfalls now it seems, just rebuilt two boxes without a hitch. Hardest part was fitting the new sleeve gear through the new bearing, it took a bit of polishing. The RS gears are still out there, some unmarked but made by the same manufacturer as identified by the same poor finish - there must have been tonnes of junk floating about in the 80's and sold to keep the bikes running.

The bearing/seal kits are great, but the real cost will come to light once you've inspected the gears (depending on your opinion of what constitutes "wear"). I ended up having to replace 3 gear sets, luckily my cases were in great shape, and everything else went without a hitch, but replacement gears can be damn expensive
