Rear tire was low, so deceided to put air in it only to discover the valve was leaking.
So any hints and tips to remove the rear wheel, to get it repaired, without the use of a paddock stand would be most appreciated.

Do you have jack stands ? (2) long 6 mm bolts where the spools go . Then you need a friend to help hold the bike. Get your car jack and a piece of plywood to go under the bike when you jack it up. You are jacking on the plywood under where the pipes Y out . Set the jack stands under the long 6mm bolts and let it down. Then order some short 6mm spools and a stand asap !

Thanks Tony. Could you clarify where the 'spools' are?
thanks. Snap a pic to be sure, I think I know what you're talking about.

If you look closely at the rear swing arm , you will see two threaded holes just in front of where the axle goes . These will be 6mm threads. The spools are the things that look like tiny 1 in. in dia. YoYo's . These will bolt to those threaded holes in the swing arm. These are what the paddock stand will hook onto when you raise up the back for service. I send along a picture of mine.

Tony, you rock. On closer inspection of the swingarm I see the two threaded holes, I had never noticed them, and a quick rumage through my 'box 'O' bolts' I came up with a couple of 6mm allen heads. And the spools have been ordered. I'm gonna settle back with a beer tonight and rob my nieghbours garage for the axle stands tomorrow. Cheers mate.

Spools on/Check
Paddock stand/Check
36mm spanner/ Check
New 180/55 17 inner tube/ ..er, wait a sec
If I know for sure that it's just the valve that is faulty, can't I just remove the valve core and replace it with a new one?
Your thoughts chaps?

That's what I would do, er first anyway.
If that doesn't work, then the grunting begins.
