I am rebuilding my 72 Combat. I obtained a new reqr sprocket as my old one was worn. the new one says "Made in England" for what that worth, but the dogs were 3/16 inch wider than the origina one. i filed them down to same size of original. I replaced cushes with the new stiff poly ones. With considerable banging on sprocket I still have a 1/4 gap between sprocket and wheel hub. Should I keep persuading it more or shave the cush rubbers? Any suggestions appreciated, thanks, John

Fitting sprocket to hub with brand new rubbers is a two person job I have found.

What I do is put a little silicone grease on the sides of the rubbers to aid things and then I sit on the left side in front of the wheel and grab the wheel with both hands and pull hard and wiggle back and forth while my assistant get the right side set up with the spacer and runs the axel through

Even with two of us with new rubbers, I finally had to take the rubbers to my bench grinder to take a tiny bit off to make it fit, did not seem to do any harm now many miles later

I did it myself using clamps to help draw the wheel on. Was not fun.

Id love to know how they dealt with it back in the factory.
Maybe the original soft bits were easier.

I used clamps also. What a pita putting that whole rear assembly together is. In hindsight I should have had someone help me.

Did you replace the wheel bearings too? If so maybe the internal stepped spacer was fitted the wrong way round, that prevents the wheel hub from seating correctly. Try fitting up the wheel hub without rubbers and see if it seats flat, if not use the front wheel axle to drive out the rear wheel bearings, remove and swap the bearing spacer around. I seem to remember the longer step was on the speedo end.
