Prolly been done to death, but.
Anyone else fed up with the way the rear fender is mounted to the frame loop? Well I am, while I got her pulled down for the rebuild, (thanks for great parts Jim) I'm considering drilling the rear frame hoop and welding in two bungs so as to do away with that crap U shaped wrap around bracket. This will allow me to mount the fender solid to the frame loop from the underside. No more slippy slidy fender. HMMMM, new shiny silver powder coat would look good with my yellow tins.

I fitted an Old Brits tail light which is supposed to also double up as a clamp (with some foam between it and the frame loops.

But I didn't like the foam idea, it looked a bit untidy and didn't clamp to the rear frame as good as I wanted.

So I drilled through the frame and fitted a single bolt. This was easy to do by assembling with the stock U clamp which has a hole already in it, so I simply used this as a 'jig' to drill through the frame loop. It is really quite sturdy. The cast tail light body also has a kind of second clamping effect too.

So if you're looking to tidy up the rear end it is easily do-able. No welding required IMHO. But if you're intending to use the stock tail light set up, I'd say that you'll put in the time to modify without any actual improvement.

Yeah, but I really like the stock tail lamp. Had to replace the original NOS one because it cracked above the clamping area. Seems to me that the only reason it cracked was due to stress and the ill designed clamping arrangement. Having the fender independently mounted would remove the usual stresses the lamp body is subject to. JMO
