I need to remove the rear chaincase and can't get a spanner on the bolt of the the left shock absorber. (on the chaincase side).
Is there a special tool for this or do I need to sacrifice a spanner and grind off a bit of the jaws?

Inserting a thin screwdriver blade or other suitable tool into the gap between the bolt hexagon and bracket will prevent it from turning.

Thanks mates, got it loose. Now I have to figure out a way to get the chaincase off the bike as my chain had gone off the rear sprocket and has completely jammed the chaincase. Might have to completely destroy it and buy a new one.

Ah, chain GUARD, not chain CASE...

There is a bolt near the front that runs thru a loop on the swingarm.

Thanks mate, I only had problems with the bolt that goes through the left shock, got it loose with the screwdriver trick. And got the chain guard out with the help of a lot of penetrating oil.
