I had the rear wheel off my 1974 Norton to repaint the brake plate. I put it back together on the weekend and took it out for a test ride. I noticed a clicking noise coming from the brake used it. I'll pull it apart this weeknd and try to find the cause. Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks

Bradley

There is a word or 2 missing from your sentence ?
Is this when using the brake, or just riding along.

Always worth checking that the chain joining link is not clipping something on its travels.
And the clip is facing the correct direction - or it can be flipped off, and then watch what happens.

If you spin the rear wheel, and apply the brake by hand, can you hear where the clicking noise comes from ?
Can the brake plate be wobbled by hand, enough that it can rub the brake drum ?
Is your back wheel perfectly aligned - side to side - so the chain has the correct tension and the wheel is pointing STRAIGHT ahead....

Try loosening both ends of axles then spin wheel and stomp on rear brake and hold while nipping up the dumb axle nut then long axle to center drum on shoes then see if solved. IF not open back up like the rest of us to discovery what we missed or what failed no fault of our own.

Check to see if master link got too close to chainguard. Feel the inside edge of chainguard with your finger for indentation if this is the onset of your noise. Had this happen to me. Thinking of inverting the clip side of master link to opposite side of chainguard.

Rear brake noise

That sounds like the likely one. I'll check it out.
Thanks all Cheers
Bradley

My chainguard rubbed on the chain so I had to gentle lever it away just a little using that handy big old screwdriver we all have in our toolbox for just that kind of thin :D g
