Okay, I broke down and did what I swore I'd never do - bought yet another speedo gearbox.

Looking for suggestions as to rear dummy axle and timing side axle torque specs - kinda wondering if overtorquing (or I should say, torquing to OEM specs, as I've never gone over those) has contributed to killing my last couple of speedo gearboxes.

Thanks folks - BrianK

If your spacers are the proper length the drive parts (gears and dogs) of the unit have no stress; you can check this by putting some dye or thin clay on the bottom of the drive notches on the wheel and see if your drive unit is seating on the spacers or the drive notches. You can make the notches deeper if needed or shim the spacer(s).
