On the first day I found this site I enrolled as a VIP member.
Many years later I just today renewed it again.

This forum offers guidance and insight that has been worth its weight in new parts and more for years now.

If you are a member who has been using the site while letting others support it you should be helping Jerry Doe and the Access Norton membership with a donation/fee to support Access Norton.

There are a lot of participants on AN with thousands of posts that seem to find it easier to let others pay...you know who you are...did you ever consider its now your turn to help?

Or are you one of those that find it easier to let others pay while you continue to play.

If you own a Norton motorcycle none of that whining about the VIP cost either.
It's $5.00 US a month to support this site.

When you think about it there's not much to think about.

I've been working on British motorcycles for over 50 years. Yesterday, I tried to get the nut off a Commando oil pump on the bench. I wrapped the gear in rubber and tightened it in my vice. Didn't hold (usually does) so I tightened it more. The nut still didn't come loose. I took it out of the vice planning to heat it incase some dummy used Locktite and that's when I noticed that I damaged the gear

Today I searched here and found something I should have known but didn't. Aluminum soft jaws. I have lots of types of soft jaws and they never work for this - I didn't realize that aluminum soft jaws existed. They are on order.

That's not the first time this site has taught me something I should have already known!

This site is worth more than $5/month to me. If you really can't afford VIP Membership, see this: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/non-paying-members-please-help.40443/post-689470

Aluminium soft jaws are easy to make if you have some small pieces of flat alloy laying around the same withe of the vice jaws cut and bend to shape, I have 3 vices set up, 2 on my work benches and one clamp on vice for work outside all with home made soft jaws even working in a maintenance fitter shop for 15+ years we always made our own for the vices.
It cost money to run a site like this and Jerry does a great job and should be supported to keep the site up and running, my auto renewal has just been paid, Jerry and Les do a great job and this site even helps us long term owners of our Nortons.
I was told by one member on here once that I know everything about Nortons, just ask Ash, he was just being a smart arse and I replied by saying "no I don't know everything about Nortons, I only know about my own Norton", but I will help any new owners learn about their new to them Norton and if I can't help I know for sure someone from here will know, it's a great place to work out any problems as well good mateship with friends even if we all live in different parts of the world.
I have owned my 850 Norton since new (49+ years now) it's no longer a full Commando just built into a Featherbed frame (45 years ago by me) but I have worked on quite a few Commandos over the last 40 years as my mates and friends of mates know that I know my stuff and how good my old Norton runs, even if they are asking for advice, I might not be very knowledgeable in the tec part of things, why Access Norton comes in handy, I am old school in everything I do and we learn all the time, and we do learn by our mistakes the hard way lol.
Anyway thanks go to Jerry and Les as well all the other knowledgeable people on this great site for keeping us well informed on everything Norton and other bikes as well, we be lost without it.

Slip-on soft jaws with magnets don't work for this purpose - the turning force makes them move. I already tried aluminum angle - didn't work. Also tried plastic, nylon, rubber covered aluminum magnet jaw covers - didn't work.

I'm talking about aluminum soft jaws that replace the standard jaws. Yes, I could buy some aluminum, cut to size, drill the holes, machine the counter bores and make them. Or I could spend less money and way less time by ordering them - so I did.

Truthfully, I can't think of anything I use the standard steel serrated jaws that came with the vice for, I always have some sort of slip on soft jaws. Having aluminum screwed on soft jaws will generally work for everything I do - wish I had thought of it long ago.
