Has anybody replaced the standard air filter on 850 commando with Ram Air pod style filters. I’ve looked at a few over here in Oz and couldn’t find one that would fit my 932 amals. The intakes on my 932’s aren’t threaded.
I would be interested what filters people are using

Are you sure your carbs are not threaded?
There should be a band screwed on,I have not used ramairs on a commando but I've used them on other bikes they are very good filters

I have a pair of pods I was using on the SS clone before I went to foam socks over velocity stacks. Seemed to work just fine. You can tighten the clamps over the collars or remove the collars and clamp them directly to the threaded carb throat.

ram air it seems are not very local in north america.... we can buy Uni filter, i've just order a piece for my mikuni vm34.

my greater concern with the K&N and S&B's is the fact that they do not filter the under mirco size and it ends up in you engine were it eats the engine ( based on contaminant level recorded during used oil sampling)
Exactly , k&n or s&b etc are better than no filter but not as good as a paper filter

I took them off a bike I bought recently and was rather surprised to see that they are nearly transparent. How they
filter anything less than the size of a grain of sand is hard to imagine. The stock paper element is a PIA to deal
with but it is a good filter.

I use uni-filter with single VM34 Mikuni, works great once carb is set , been around 10 years now I guess ,the filter I use has black sock supported by inner spring with a red outer sock , clean and oil once a year and good to go .....

So where were ya disappointed KN guys when I pointed out the lack of long term adequate filtering by the race oriented after market types. Left me sounding like a over cautious ignorant worry wart when a handful of offended/wisdom KN users exclaimed at me they had prefect fine filtering - for years. Good for them. I and Wes learned our KN or Uni lesion on smoking worn rings within a season. We ended up putting UNI type foam over them. In Peel case even tried the ham can size KN (proper slight AN oiled) to find grit in carb rubber pleats so put a wrap of foam around that - til breaking down to break into ham can hassle again to put great factory flowing paper element in. Bet if ya put screen in to hold lightly stuffed toilet paper might filter better, still look racy custom and flow adequately.

Hobot; my experience was similar. and we also did UOA, and always found high levels of silica (sand) in the oil, until we went back to the factory paper element (cars). I however had used a 2 stage foam filter in another vehicle which seemed to provide good filtration, so am prepared to see how a Unifilter will work on the mikuni carb. I do not expect to see fine sand getting by it, but the ultimate test will be a UOA after a good riding season.
UOA = used oil analsys

Thanks mate didn’t realise they had a band on. Feeling a bit stupid

Mate have you got a part no for the S&B’s

No, sorry, they were fitted to my Commando when I bought it. S&B is the only marking.

Dimensons are approximately 100H x 70W x 90L (mm) and carb flange inside diameter of about 44-45mm

Ok 850Cdo, I got rid of my old tractor oil bath 'filter' and replaced oil with lawnmower UNI type foam, 2" thick so glad to know its a decent solution. I get on steep slopes bouncing and very cold or hot conditions which sloshes oil or changes carb mixture by thicker oil viscosity changes letting dust filled bubbles through. Interestingly the intake begins on side of tractor hood through slotted vents in a circle to swirl air and sling out stuff like seeds and grass flakes into a jar before going into the filter element. Got about 1/2" of pasture trash and large dust particles in jar so about time to empty.

I've seen air flow up to 70's mph d/t special light conditions to see the air splits around engine then violently slaps together at carb intake/filer area, which should sling out most paved road grit relieving civilized KN users from quickly noticing and may never. I would not use KN in Alaska or Canada or Ozark gravel travel or sand dune/him climbs. Maybe not on salt flats either.

I liked the look of red foam wrap around KN filter on single Mikuni, by a kit that had velcro straps already attached to hold it snug. Trim for width/fit of course.

There's plenty of things in the world for people to feel stupid about and this ain't one of them mate!

K&N and BMC filters rely on proper oiling to filter as designed. Running them dry means they will flow more air and pass more particles. Yearly cleaning and re-oiling keeps performance at the highest level. I have a BMC in my 76,000-mile ZX-14 that has been in there since I bought it with 20K on the clock, so nightmare tales of lunched engines may be a bit exaggerated. By the end of the 2019 riding season, I should crack 100,000 miles.

I fitted a K&N filter to one bike which I removed & kept when I sold it and fitted it to yet another bike, the outcome was one day when trying to get the bike to haul me up a long not too steep hill it wouldn’t climb it – I found out that the air filter was clogged. IMO K&N are good my gas mileage increased by 5 mpg just by fitting these, so it appears to let in more air when new, it uses big grits of dirt to clog up onto its oily filter which in turn blocks up the smaller grains getting into the engine.

My '69 750 Cdo had a K&N on it when I got it but it has been a real pain to remove and clean. I planning to use 2 UNI pods starting this season. They will be much easier to install and therefore I'll clean them more often.
BTW we have a few more paved roads up here in Canada now. ;)

Glad to hear they keeping roads up "out west" , I had the Duc out your way early May last year and there was some great riding , disregarding weather of course .... I had sunburn when I started , it had faded by time I made it to the right coast ... oh yeah , K&N on Duc too ....
