Hi Lads,

Just noticed towards the end of a spin today the trip counter stopped working. The speedo indicator is fine & the total milage counter is still working but the trip numbers are not moving.

I tried resetting the trip just to fiddle with the dial but still no luck.

Anybody come across a nifty fix for this or is it just in need of a rebuild?

I've read most of the posts about erratic speedo needles and making sure the gearbox is greased & the cable is oiled, etc.

Sounds like a rebuild is required, but as its a minor but irritating fault you can fit a bicycle speedo to give you trip miles if as I do you use it to gauge when to fill up, these can be set very accurately and are a good backup. Only downside is that you can't read them in the dark  . When your speedo fails send it for a rebuild, cost will be the same regardless of fault except for accident damaged ones. If its a Vaugelia then save up for a Smiths instead, Veglias are not normally rebuilt, but Smiths for Nortons do not have a Trip unless you use a Triumph core and a Norton face

If it's a Veg-Liar, consider yourself lucky that it works at all!

Mine works fine after a home rebuild. Needles come loose on the drum and the worm gear driving the milometer and trip likes to pop out of it's bearing trough, fixed with a thin tin retainer glued in place.
Sounds like the gear has come loose or broken on the trip part. Not had mine apart in a while but both are driven by a vertical worm and pinion from the input side (pinion on the end of each milo and trip shafts) so it will have to come apart. It's not a difficult instrument to fix if you have patience.

Hi Lads,

Thanks for the replies.

I'll leave well alone until the end of the Summer, want to use the bike as much as I can over the summer.

Kommando, thanks for the suggestion about the bicycle speedo, I'll look into that.

Speedo & Tacho are both Smiths, so they can be rebuilt.

All the best

Kevin
