Question about a certain bike

This certain bike, is this anyones on here? Also is it "safe" to run a belt drive setup without any surround, whats the expected price to convert over to a rear disc option, and not realted to that bike, whats the estimated cost for a 5 speed gear set?

Safe if you don't forget to ties you laces tight.

It's a MkIII bike so no cost to convert to rear disk.

A Quaife 5 speed box (complete) is £2500. The case is about £250 so I guess the gearset is something like £2000.

(sidenote: a magnesium or aluminum replacement case is only $300-ish? Sounds like a good deal if you keep breaking boxes, ahem, hobot...) :mrgreen:

I searched on the qualife gear set earlier, and was astonished at the price. I figured that was for a race setup primarily, as I noticed they had a separate 5 speed option, but did not list a price

I think it does/did belong to one of the forum members, as I do recognise it, and I'm sure I remember seeing it posted here a few times, but it's a long while ago (3 - 4 years, maybe?).

Standard 5 speed quaife without K/s is only £1400 I think (one of my Dutch pals just bought one) Speak to Mick Hemmings, not available off the shelf only when there's enough interest for Quaife to make a batch.

For the belt drive, Im currently installing one and like a exposed look to the holes in the primary cover (Have not seen milled holes pattern I like). I was worried about items becoming entangled, but I dont think it will be that bad. I can always make a small cover.

have you checked out the Trans Tasman Industries gearboxes? The Noo Zelland company make a 4, 5 & 6 speed box/trans, comes in heavy duty or extra heavy option aswell. I see the heavier version has two bearings on the sleeve gear for extra support. http://www.ttindustries.com/products.html

I have, but figured they cost nearly the same as a qualife setup. Maybe Ill persue them alittle more.

no way would I run a primary like that, but is just personal. Chopper guys do it all the time

I'm so glad so many builders have such varied tastes to tempt or recoil us.
I like this certain bikes clean mean-ness, only eye clutter is the fuel hoses, so much thought to route so nicely, I'd better study it some more for ideas to steal.

With non-lace boot without bell bottom jeans no much risk to snare the exposed primary just a warning rub till programed how to place foot. Could hurt ya in a crash on LH side, which would be my constant main worry thank you.

Thanks for reminding me of what remains to spend on, after I break the AMC crap inside a Qualife shell, I may have saved up enough for basic TT Industry 4 spd.
The cases are not really the weak link in trannys, nor have I broken AMC shells running them - just ruining one going berserk trying to seat a bearing so it did not just fall out when cold. "PoW - To the MOon Alice!"

Does reveal how thin the meat is surrounding the bearings - maybe 3/16".
The weak stuff of AMC is inside and Qualife is not much beefier where it matters most. Can ya even imagine a Commando bullet proof enough you can't break it unless you deadly crash it and don't care any more.
Cryogenic tempering does help in toughness and rebound from deformations but not as much as a $4000 F-ederal R-eserve A-udit U-nit D-enominations upgrade.

I'm wondering if Peel's lighter bike/wheels will give clutch slip or tire spin before main shaft bows up like a scared cat spine.

I'm with you there! Something I learned in shop class 101:

Very rapidly spinning belt and wheels + hands (or feet) / no protective cover = eventual pain and disfigurement

Everyone gets to pick their own risk level, but in general, open drive chains and belts are accidents waiting to happen. After a friend of mine lost the end of his finger in an open camshaft drive belt, he decided that the extra weight of a minimal belt guard wasn't all that bad after all. Plenty of horror stories out there of fingers and toes lost in similar incidents. The genefit/risk ratio just doesn't seem high enough to me. Good looking bike, though.

Why would you ask if it costs anything to convert the rear brake to a disc?

It already has a disc in the rear, you can clearly see the caliper in the photo.

Looks like a broken ankle waiting to happen to me. At least put one of the alloy racing guards on it. Better yet, nicely vented stock primary cover.

I don't get why anyone would run a unprotected primary on a street bike. It's like running velocity stacks on a carb. Looks cool but what happens if you end up in a bunch of dust ? Seems to me the Rotor / Stator would pick up magnetic junk from the road over time, water born grit, rocks & dirt will certanly get into every thing including seals & it will all wear out faster. This may be an acceptable risk for a race bike but just silly for a bike that gets ridden in the ever changing street. Why would any one do it?

I plan to be going with a covered primary, I just find the look appealing. The reason i asked about the price or the rear disc is because I dont have a MKIII. Though Im unsure if the need for a rear caliper is needed if Im not racing.

Read some of ludwig's posts on how he did his rear wheel.
