Grim reading indeed, but I suspect that there are different definitions of death by Covid here. The UK uses quite a strict definition (something like within 28 days of discharge from hospital??) whereas other countries may use other measures which reduce the death total. Perhaps it's better to use some measure of excess deaths, to capture both those directly from Corona and those caused by for example by not catching other ailments in time?

Different countries appear to be base their death rate on different definitions, i. e. The UK states that the amount of deaths within 28 days since first diagnosed with coronavirus.
Others have a different criteria. . . . . .

Total excess deaths was the best real indicator IMHO (excess being defined as a significant increase on the 5 year rolling average for any given week).
Even that’s getting tricky now though as the impact of Covid measures from last year (delayed interventions etc) are now adding to the excess deaths total, thus muddying the waters.

Edit here : its 28 days after a positive test, so someone who is in hospital for 5 weeks and then dies does get counted.

Steve are you sure about that? I thought it also included any deaths where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate ?

That's from Public Health England, though I do remember mention at one point of death certificate mentions also being included. Perhaps the accounting has been changed? In the early part of the pandemic there were not very many tests being done after all.
Could also be a difference in practice between England, Scotland NI and the little Welsh buggers.

Had my first jab yesterday. Feel a little rough today, but seems from talking to a couple of mates that's par for the course.

Latest on the AstraZeneca vaccine jabs is that the wonderful EU are trying to get this drug company to hand over all the vaccine that is made in Britain because there has been a delay in delivering to the EU.
Considering that they signed an agreement for the vaccine 3 months after GB did they are throwing a hissy fit and having a public row because the UK has vaccinated more of it's population than any other European country.
The word karma springs to mind.

Do tell us if either of you have any strange urges following doses...

Not worried about that, sex drive left long time ago. But I can't wait to get that gumment micro chip installed in my arm. Then maybe I'll know who Q is.

I dared watch the news again.
Hmmm....

Perhaps one of the saddest things is, many people who did the right thing had other people bring the virus to them (including into their homes)
Paying for that with their lives via a slow and painful death.

This will only affect people in the UK but if you are told to self isolate by the test and trace people you can only get paid 10 days statutory sick pay
IE if you have the test and trace app on your phone it'll ping you to tell you that you have been in contact with someone with covid 19 it then tells you by law you must stay in for 10 and self isolate, if you go out you can be fined
This happened to me two weeks ago on a Sunday morning laying in bed
Then the test and trace people texted me they emailed me and phoned me every day to see if I was self isolating
Yes was my answer (they know dam well that I am because they can track my phone) I asked who I'd been in contact with? We can't tell you was the reply
I asked where it was I came into contact with this person? We can't tell you was the reply again
I asked what day I'd made contact? Again we can't tell you
Now I have only been to work and to a supermarket
Nobody at work was tested positive,so must have been in the supermarket but who knows!
As I don't get sick pay from work I thought at least I'd get SSP turns out that because I had time off with covid 19 symptoms last march and the recommendation then was to take 14 days off I have used up all my permissable SSP (it turned out to be bronchitis) so I have had to take 6 working days off to self isolate with absolutely no pay
There is a one off £500 payment you can get from test and trace but if you have savings you can't get it
I've applied for it anyway so let's see
Now I have found out that our site workers that have to travel into London on the tube regularly get pinged on the test and trace app
And have to isolate for 10 days without any money because they'd used the 10 days up on a previous isolation
These blokes are younger than me and have kids at home and mortgages to pay and there's no let up in the construction industry so you are forced to go to work and forced to use public transport
Luckily I work in the yard and don't travel to the building sites anymore
I've now uninstalled the app from my phone because I can't keep taking time off with no pay at all
So if you are thinking it'd be a good idea to put it on your phone I wouldn't bother

Sometime in the future I believe we will find out that the Covid Virus or part of it that is not recognised by existing testing can stay in your body somewhere and re-appear at any time your general health fall to a low ebb. This is something the Chicken pox virus does .it hides in the spine and re-appears as shingles when your health is poor. I have had shingles 3 times. I had covid in DEC 2019 and have had strange medical events regularly since then , and have been vacinated 2 weeks ago. Wife and I today started experiencing some symptoms , keeping fingers crossed .

I was in the UK in 2008. It breaks my heart to see this happening in such a beautiful place. We in Australia, do not know how lucky we are. But I don't know how much longer we can stay ahead of the virus. There is persistent pressure from our business people to adopt a more open approach. I can understand their money difficulties, but the problem is much bigger than that.

There is also a shingles vaccine.

There is always a bright side....the UK government have not (yet) rolled out the new Chinese anal swab test for Covid
Claimed by Chinese to be more accurate than throat/nose swab or finger blood test.

(But seriously, I'm very sorry to read about Baz and Norton Bob and others - good luck fellow Norton owners)

Consider the source when posting "news" articles. The New York Post is birdcage liner. It's only rival is the National Enquirer.

We are both feeling better today. It was just a reaction to the Vacine we think. The EU is doing really silly stuff ,trying to block the export of vacines produced under contract and interferring with supply chains that took 3 months to set up. Serve them right if future plans for production facilities get changed. Who wants to work for bullies who don't read the contract ? . I'm sure we would have made a working compromise , but we do not respond well to threats. I certainly never have ,.Just as well I'm not in charge !!!
