During my first visit to NZ, I was seated at my host's table for breakfast and was offered Marmite, which is apparently their version of vegemite. To my host's delight I spread it on a piece of toast and took a good sized bite!

Zoiks! I'd been set up! They knew that we Americans were a rather fond of quantity and that the minuscule amount typically used would seem useless to the uninitiated.
Reminds me of a post doc we had at our lab from the recently collapsed USSR. We invited her to a holiday supper where my wife had prepared some sushi rolls. When the Russian saw the Wasabi her eyes widened and got very excited, heaping a huge dollop on her roll. I said "Have you had this before? You know what it is?". " Oh yes, yes, I absolutely love it!" Was the reply. Well, Ive never seen such a reaction as she popped it in her mouth. Looked like her head was about to explode. She had mistaken it for guacamole.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed half a million people in just over six months, with the toll passing the sombre milestone of 500,000 known deaths on Sunday night.

The true death toll and number of cases is believed to be higher, due to differing testing rates and cause of death definitions, delays in reporting and suspected underreporting. But cases are rising by about a million a week, the WHO warned last week, with the rate of contagion doubling since 21 May, according to analysis by AFP.

The UK likely to have to lock down Liecester again after a big spike in the Virus. No one likes to mention that the city is jammed full of immigrants many never learnt the language or ever trusted a government , How can they be expected to understand or obey TV instructions.

Gilead Sciences will charge U.S. hospitals $3,120 per treatment course for the COVID-19 treatment drug Remdesivir — and that’s with private insurance. The pharmaceutical giant is charging other developed countries 25 percent less, but still claiming it is pricing the drug “well below value.”

Gilead invented the drug about 10 years ago when it was searching for treatments for hepatitis C but did not develop it.

The development of this drug was funded by at least $70 million of US taxpayer money.

This is redistribution of wealth upwards, to corporations and shareholders in the middle of a pandemic.

And people whine about "socialized medicine" and "welfare" in the US.

The development costs of such pharmaceutics is typically several 100 Million to Billions of dollars, depending on the type. Also note that for every drug making it to market, there can be hundreds of failures the company has had to test and pay for, only to get nothing back for each failure. That is why a single drug seems to cost so much more than it really should be worth when looking at its manufacture/marketing costs. The successful ones must subsidize the failures.
Regarding price differences in different countries, one of the big drivers there is laws the US has that prohibit states from negotiating bulk purchase pricing from the manufacturer. Canada does not have such laws and so can provide the exact same drugs at significantly lower prices. We get/used to get bus loads of seniors/diabetics coming across the border specifically to buy there prescription medicines at our pharmacies, many have Made in USA right on the label.

I have type O negative, why should that give me hope? I certainly have no trust in our federal government. When I say federal government, I mean our president.

Apparently people with type A blood are most at risk of having bad covid symptoms, type O least risk, but it's not a huge difference. I did read it in a reliable source, but forget where. Certainly not from Faux. When I said guvmint I also meant the potus (lower case on purpose).

When I cashed my $1200 'bonus' I gave it to our local PBS stations, there are 2 of them. One classical music, one news, WETA and WAMU.

Seventy different languages spoken in Leicester!! But, to be honest, this won't be anything out of the ordinary. Our meat industry only survives on imported labour, Covid outbreaks in Wales will be as much down to the workers as the working environment. Many come here solely to earn for back home, live cheek by jowl in cramped accommodation to offset expenses, and sadly many really couldn't care about local working practices. But, the natives won't do the work, so it's Hobson's choice for the companies.
I don't condemn most who come here for the money, I know plenty who wouldn't get up in the morning or travel ten miles to work, let alone cross borders.. If the system stinks, the system needs overhauling..

The Leicester story isn’t about the workers and their living choices though, it’s about the company owners paying half the legal minimum wage, not providing PPE, not implementing any social distancing, forcing workers to come in even when they’ve phoned in sick with COVID symptoms. And worst of all, it was reported to the (left wing) authorities repeatedly, and they did nothing, until it was exposed by an undercover reporter...

It stinks of cronyism at the highest level of local authority. There could be 1000s of factories in the same, or worse, conditions. It’s an absolute scandal.

Why isn’t the current emotion aimed in this direction where it can help REAL people TODAY instead of pulling down statues of people who died 200 years ago FFS...!?

There is a chicken factory in Wales where a lot of the workers were found positive for Covid 19 the government were forced to act and close them down.
