It worked :D

Do you have some kind of friction steering damper fitted, as there appears to be a large knob at the top of the steering stem?

Yes, and why do you have that rag under it?

Pity about the side panel stripes being on the wrong way around. Apart from that, what a nice bike.

Did you miss the front brake?

Not to nitpick, cause it's still an awesome bike.

It's not unusual to see Roadster panels with the pinststripes "back to front" :? As some painters don't seem to know which side the panels are supposed to fit!

Apparently, some late 850 MkIIAs could have been built with the disc brake on the left side.

Well, I'll be blowed. Thought I was the only one in the world with a frictional damper.
Lovely colour.

Thats an impolite question :) we all have had those at sometime or another....:)

Obviously it's to stop the dust on the floor getting stuck to the underside of the bike.

Nice bike! Funny I went to see a mk2a last weekend with the stripes the wrong way round! The same painter (who is first class BTW) made the same mistake with mines about 8 years ago, when I picked the stuff up he asked what I thought, I said it would be fine when he repainted the stripes the right way round, since then I've seen another 3 he's done the wrong way, looks like he never learned! Don't worry only the real saddo's (like us) will ever notice

Thanks for the nice comments gents. I should have moved the rag shouldn't I but in truth, it's there in case she leaks. There is the odd drip here and there (the bike, not me) and as I'm playing catch up trying to get to know the Commando, I really don't know how much to expect. I was brought up expecting British bikes to drip some oil, but I noticed someone on this forum say they didn't tolerate any leaks. Maybe I've been wrong all these years ? I'm pleased someone else could answer the question about the friction damper (thanks); should I keep it or replace it ? On the left hand disk brake, as far as I can tell it looks original. When I was researching which Commando to get, I came across an article which said the factory made a batch of left handers, although the reason for this wasn't apparent.

Thanks for pointing out the error with the stripes (I think); I'll probably leave well alone as the paint job was done recently by the PO and looks decent to me.

Re leaks...since I recently installed new rings and did the associated gaskets/sealers/truing of various surfaces, my 850 does not leak at all so it is quite possible to make them essentially leak free. The only oil around my bike is from my over-enthusiastic lubing of the standard rear chain. I plan to go the o-ring chain route soon...

When I first saw the picture, I thought someone had put the right slider on the left-hand side, the left on the right-hand side and installed the wheel backwards. Is that possible?

Yes, or swap over the complete fork legs, which is what the factory did on the MkIII models (with a new hub and different brake line parts).

It would be interesting to know if candyapplered's 850 has the MkIII type hub wheel or not, but the spoke pattern looks like it's a reversed pre-MkIII wheel.
