Bike idling in neutral, no noise from primary area.

Pull clutch in and put in first gear, audible kind of scratchy whirling type noise starts coming from primary.

Noise goes away as clutch lever is let out a little bit. This is new to me, never experienced this before.

Any ideas?

Plates are new and recently cleaned, clutch properly adjusted, dry belt primary, 73 850.

I believe that is the welcome and normal sound sound of a dry clutch. Get used to it and enjoy it's smooth and consistent operation. This is an unsung benefit of the belt drive conversion. Very close to the sound of Ducati's.
A highly admired sound by many enthusiasts, I might add.

He's had a dry clutch for a while, if I recall.

New plates tho...

Truely belt drive drive dry clutch with sealed bearing or regular Commando primary dry clutch?
Big difference.

7 minutes work will tell if the clutch nut is loose.

Hobot, I just checked the clutch "nut" through the inspection plug hole, nice and tight, so no that is not it.

This is weird as I have never heard this noise before, and I have had my dry belt primary for 15 years now.

The noise only starts when motor is running and put in to first gear while holding clutch lever in.

Am I hearing the plates "rattling", and they stop rattling when clutch lever is starts to clamp them together?

That would be my normal guess but this noise is more like something going around, quite audible, and it IS a new
noise as I have this setup for a long time and never heard this before.

Is is possible I am hearing some gearbox bad noise but thinking it is coming from the primary?

About :30 into this video there's a shot of the belt drive and you can make out the sound of the plates rattling.

Sorry if may have over assumed or simplified your issue.
My clutch makes the swooshing steel sound whenever the clutch is pulled in and goes away when the clutch begins to engage and the plates come together.

I am familure with this sound because of Ducati history I have. Because you have a belt, it is easy to run with primary cover off to better define the origin of the sounds. You may find that the sound is there but not as pronounced as when your are hearing it in first gear. But then again maybe another cause.

If your system is nice and dry and the pack is a good height and adjusted just right, the sound may have just come to life due to proper setup.

oK then i lose what little bit i bet.
I've run a dry belt primary most my Commando life style and never heard anything different but less chain whirling sound. Nothing for it but standard dig in and hope its obvious and simple and cheap.

So you have lost nothing and I have won nothing.

All I can say is the sound is pleasing to MY mechanically oriented hearing.

That being said, I will not say that something is wrong if you don't hear it as long as you don't say that something is wrong if I do hear it . Deal?

Maybe Hobit was talking about the clutch hub nut. Can't see that from the outside. Gotta take out the clutch diaphram to see it.
But it's probably just a normal sound.

Chasing mysterious noises on a Commando can be very time consuming and usually fruitless. If the clutch works, ie., doesn't slip or drag it probably doesn't warrant anything further. Many is the time I wish I'd heeded the old adage: If is isn't broke, don't fix it. If its on its way to breaking it will soon become very obvious

Naw, I was only thinking of the outer adjuster nut but guess someone we know will be exposing the hub nut to see for sure. I've had some noise and clutch failure to adjust when the far side main shaft nut backed off. Pulling in lever mostly moved the main shaft not the plates apart for full release yet letting lever out didn't clamp plates worth a darn either. Might find the plate teeth all pointy so not settling in as stable. I'll trade ya some clutch noise for some front braking effect.

Gosh that's so close to my own way, in past, and fixed things to really fail, but still get pretty pensive on first hints of impending show stoppers or slap down expensive failures. But if you can't find a sourced and functions, then what the heck go till it shows up on its own or not.

No kidding with rear sets on Peel, primary was only one nut away form full exposure by removing the central fastener w/o any mess to catch. I"ve had crank end nut back off for round and round scratching sound but its seemed more so on clutch lever release rather than pulling in.
