So I have been enjoying the crap out of my commando this summer.
However the primary does leak.
How tight should the fixing nut on the cover be?
is there a specified torque?
when looking in the inspection hole ( center ) should the two shoulders that the bolt runs through touch?, currently they do not as I dont want to over tighten and cause damage.

What is the best way to stop the primary fluid ( ATF type F ) from seeping out the felt seal behind the clutch basket and onto the chain? I did install a new felt seal at begining of the summer.

Thanks in advance 8) .......

25 ft-lb for the nut.

This is a handy guide to print out and keep with your workshop manual:

As for weeping ATF around the felt seal, make sure you don't have too much oil in the case - it should only be enough to splash on to and lubricate the primary chain as it comes around the bottom of the clutch. When I replaced my felt, I saturated it with grease, and it seems to work OK. Later 850s had an inner disc with a splash shield on it, but I can find no reference to it in my parts books, or pictures of it. I've seen it on a couple of '74s

I've been looking for that inner disk too, but have never found it. I put my primary back together with the old felt and so far, no leaks from there for some strange reason.

25 lbs. seems about right but it is FAR more important to shim the support stud so that both primary case halves mate together perfectly flat when drawn together with that nut. No bowing allowed. The giant rubber O ring can be lightly greased too and the manufactured join- seam on it fitted upwards to the topside. Logical. Less oil in there too helps as it's a tad over-oiled.

At 25 ft-lbs, I can see my outer case bend a bit, but it seems to work. I've put sillycon in the groove so the o-ring stays there and I may slather a tiny bit of ultra-grey on the outer cover. But it doesn't leak. I think I could even go with less torque.

WHY the silly spacers SUPPOSED to be there ( Washer on Stud . Is so the Belly Thing is BOTTOMED OUT at the 25 or whatever Lb/ Ft . :|

Acorrding to something somewhere , Theres a SPECIFIED GAP , that essentially the spacer washer shims to Correct ( Checked Rubber Out ?? )
This gives the rubber O ring the correct Nip / seal . Hopefully . :(

Ensures the Tension is not really Bowing the outer . Same as the blankety INNER is SHIMMED Straight on the STUD . It was written . :)

Yeah, my primary bolt bottoms out on the stud when it's at 25 ft-lbs. But it does bend the outer case a bit at the center. I'm not sure that's right, but it doesn't leak and the clearance between the outer and inner seems to be consistent around the perimeter. And yes the inner needs to be shimmed right and straight or nothing will work right. Mine is real close.

I saw the sheet metal sliding holder for the felt and thought, yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh, riiiiiiiggggghhhhhht.... seal? lol Washed it up with brake cleaner, and swabeed a small amount of super black RTV under it, with the help of a hooked pick. Dry as can be. WAY overfilled with ATF, enough to cover the bottom run of chain. Clutch works perfectly.

The best way to stop that leak is to convert to a belt drive. No leaks, quieter, easier on trans, etc. Just a thought.
