Hi all have not been on here for a wile. Checked the primary chain today as had the clutch slip a bit last week. Found chain case full of oil with an aluminium paste in the oil. Looks like the chain has been rubbing against the rear chain case It has no circling at back of the spacer washer and no shims either. How do you set up the distance off the rear chain case to the back of the clutch basket ,also chain looks like it has been marking the two front mounts that hold the alternator to the rear chaincase. Any help would be Great. John Norfolk. England

"circling"
Do you mean circlip?
If the clutch location circlip isn't there then you definitely need to fit one.

With the circlip and spacer fitted, check the engine and clutch sprocket alignment with a straight edge (chain off), add shims as required.

Sounds like the chain has been running too slack, or, it could just be time for a new primary chain?

And/or, was the clutch hold-down nut tightened to spec by the manual? Remembering the admonitions that it not be tightened past 40 lb/ft or the circlip shears off, letting the clutch move towards the inner cover.

and now.....

on to your other problem, an overfull primary

sounds like you are leaking engine oil into the primary through an old loose seal between inner primary and crankcase

clutch slipping cause all that oil fouled the plates, time to strip clutch clean and dry plates, maybe time for new primary chain? and new mail seal ?

Yes sounds like it needs a good overhall, new chain be a good time to replace with one of Andy's duplex chain, clean the clutch plates, replace the main crank seal, adjust to the right amount of slack and put some tranny oil (F type) and no more than 7f oz and make sure you do the maintenances regularly, I am still running my orginal clutch plates after 42 years of ownership and a lot of hard riding with lots of miles and my clutch is light one finger if i wanted to, make sure the clutch centre isn't worn or the pressure plate has not lost its tension and you should have trouble free running.

OR, one or more of the three screws securing the inner primary cover has worked loose .....these are tapped thru into the sump.

IIRC, the stator bracket mounting screws also tap thru into the sump. All such screws must be sealed.

No Slick the stator studs are in blind holes, but the inner chain case screws are, as you said, through into the crankcase and would benefit from some sealant.
