Primary chain tension

I read up on a lot of old threads regarding chain tension and how the final drive chain could affect the tension on the primary chain. It seems to me that the torque from the engine would tend to pull the transmission forward but the torque that the tranny exerts on the rear wheel would pull the transmission to the rear. Any movement would be slight but there is a bit of slop in the transmission position adjuster after all.
I decided to mount a pointer on the top of the transmission with a stationary mark on the cradle to show any movement of the GB. There was no movement at all but when I checked the tension of the primary chain I found it was quite a bit tighter when hot than when cold. Is this just due to the clutch basket growing from the heat? I thought the chain would heat up and lengthen yielding the same play hot or cold but no. Has anyone else noticed this?
