Simple question for the cognoscenti. I have a '74 850 with the big ugly (IMO) rectangular stop/tail light. All pattern parts so no "originality" issues. I'd like to swap it over for the earlier Lucas 697 "Beehive" type on the stock mounting. Bearing in mind the vagaries of fit with pattern parts, should the mounting holes in the rear fender the same? Any traps to be wary of?

I swapped to the earlier tail light on a MK.111, a fit fiddly and you might have to elongate the plate mount bracket holes slightly in the rear fender, be careful not to use an overlong bolt in the front mount, but no problems. I agree with you that early ones look much better.

I too have the earlier type ready to swap out on my MK3. much better looking and there is now the L.E.D. circuit board swap available for the beehive type :D

Is this the BulbsThatLast4Ever LED board? Was just looking into this. British Cycle Supply is out of them but expecting 100 pcs in soon. It requires mods to the old light unit (removing the reflector around the bulb by cutting) so I would hate to do this to an original 679 Lucas part, but the $15 cheap copies should work fine.

Do you know the cost for the LED conversion kit from British Cycle? I looked on the website, but couldn't find pricing.
