Not really,I just heard that Jeff Powers ,owner of Norton Rats Tavern in Cuzco, Peru ,was smacked by a truck yesterday whilst riding his Norton high up in the Andes. Both toast and I am so hoping he's joking about. I'm working in a few hours, can others reaffirm or not please.. :|

Bet he saw it coming for that final flash of fear spike anger. Jeff hung out on NOC and BI list to prep for his first long range adventure tour and sent out some of his window sticker ads. Like is short so Jeff ate his desert first.

Powers that be to Norton Rats Peru

Wife and I were in Coscu about 6 months ago (not on Motorcycles) and though we almost went into Norton Rats several times we never actually did. Now I wish we had; I had never heard of it until we saw it there and I didn't realize what it was/who he was while we were there. :(

Interestingly our local guide had no idea what a Norton motorcycle was; when I asked him if "that Norton Rats place" was actually about motorcycles he assured me, "Yes it's the local Harley Club." I asked him why a Harley club would be called Norton Rats he told me that that was the model of Harley that the owner rode. I tried to explain that a Norton was an actual separate brand of motorcycle but I don't think I ever convinced him.

Sadly, I didn't really learn about Norton Rats until after coming home and mentioning it to my friend Art Bone, who then explained it all to me.

I went into Norton Rats about 2 weeks ago, very quiet , not much happening. I was told that Jeff had sold his interest in the business. Very sorry to hear of his accident.

Sad news - I never met him but did go to Cuzco several times during the 5 years I lived in Peru. The roads are a disaster, the drivers suicidal, hence very few bikes on the roads when I was there.

You really need to worry when the sign in the rear window of the bus in front reads " God /Jesus is driving" ...........

'nuff said

This leaves Me as the only Norton owning bar owner in South America.Jeffs shoes are too big for me to fill.I had a chat with his sister on facebook ahe seemed to be taking it as well as you can with these things. She reminded me something which all Mothers will tell you.SLOW DOWN! I will try to take her advice.
RIP Jeff.

Al did she tell you the circumstances and did excessive Commando speed or truck speed or both come into play? I've read Jeff's log on his first epic journey and going fast was not mentioned, just trying to make it w/o a new break down while loaded down dodging constant hazards of all sorts. Anywho nothing to really learn but any mc is dangerous lack of full control of life and limb. I always ask myself how lucky i feel and sometimes can talk myself out of it.

Before my recent trip I was last in Peru in 1981 on a BMW, what I can say is that the roads in the Highlands are very much better, think Two lane Tarmac rather than single lane gravel, much more traffic and many more people, driving standards are not too bad, lots of traffic police just waiting to shake people down.

I chose to stay away from the details of the incident-It didn't feel right to bring it up.What I can tell you is that after 17 years in Colombia,Ecuador and Peru is the following.
Always expect the unexpected, never relax and drive at maximum 75-80% of your ability or you will die and soon.As an ex London despatch rider(7 years) Periferal vision is the greatest survival tool you have-learn to use it!!!
Try to remember you'll be dead and those you leave behind suffer.
Jeez I'm getting older

Al, Jeff & then others are still flashing though daily. If ya ride ya can die no fault of your own any where any time. I know its a blood sport - hobby and what its feels like trying survive dying of impact crush blood lost and nerve shock if not hit so hard ***

Jeff is example of brave dude striking out with what I call scared confidence, moving from homeland to create a business plus epic scale tours on Commando he basically learned as it failed past points of no return.

Hit hard enough, like my ultralight smack - blank gone painless. Others with head and neck injury were horrific from 1st instant to over a year later. Some like falling down trees or tumbling from race track ya only feel bones-joints-ligaments parting and thuds.

I've been practicing since my younger brother Dale's out of the blue death to remember ride events, mostly the merely pleasant ones with eye popping scenery and the mellow engine sounds in case I'm merely disabled and not killed out right next time out. Every now and then I image-in what scenes someone like Jeff was filled with. I should of taped his Commando riding Rat on inside of my office window, ugh, thought I could get another sometime.

I dropped by the tavern when I visited peru, but the owner was not there, I wanted a souvenir T-shirt, but they did not have my size so I bought a long sleeve shirt which sorta fitted me. I found out the shirt was not made for my orangutan arms so I gave it away on this forum. Cuzco is a wondeful place, I hope everyone has the opportunity to see it sometime.
