An inquiry I made about a bike I saw for sale online. Here is the reply from the seller. Typical "on a ship/oilrig" BS. Wondering how they get around the C.O.D ? No money up front? Too good to be true it usually is.

"Hello,

As you probably noticed, the price is rather low for this bike.I can ship the bike to you and you will pay C.O.D (CASH ON DELIVERY). The reason why I am selling the bike at this price is because I'm from Sweden .I was in USA and bought the bike from USA and I took the bike with me in Sweden. I work on a cruise ship, I'm naval officer, I work 6 months on board and 3 months I stay home, at this moment I'm home.

The bike is here in my garage in Sweden, you can drive/ride a unregistered vehicle only 3 months in Sweden then you have to register the vehicle to get Swedish documents. In Sweden it is very complicated and expensive to register a vehicle. I have all the documents but the bike has US documents and as i said, the law is very complicated here to register a vehicle that is imported from outside Europe.

Now, I can't come to USA to sell the bike because I'll spend much money and lose more time, my only chance to sell this bike is to find a buyer in the U.S. or in another country.

I can send the bike to your home, shipping will take approximately 10 working days and i`ll cover the charges, after you receive the bike you have another two days to inspect it. When the inspection period end, the shipping company will contact you and if there are any issues with the bike you can refuse it. If all is good, and I'm sure it will be, they will help you with the transfer of ownership. If you are interested to buy write me back with your shipping information and your phone number(cell or home).
You won't find another bike in such condition at this price.

Please reply, Thanks"

Aha, the old working on a ship scam !
What was the bike, may we ask ?
Can they hit you for the freight somehow, if you reject it we wonder ??

BTW, I bought an old bike, off an ex-ships engineer.
Wherever he went, he kept it down in the engine room.
And went ashore with it for transport.
It is apparently VERY well travelled, with very little actual running.
Although all the oil was gummed up inside it when I got it...

P.S. Be very very careful that some expensive junk doesn't turn up on your doorstep - payable COD ??
And a Freight Co that would want to be paid, twice, before sending it back...

He's a naval officer in the cruise ship battalion, most likely the entertainment division.
Of course he will be using a fast cruise ship to get the bike to you in 10 days from Northern Europe and you don't have to pay for it until you see it because he trusts you.

Sounds fine I would go for it.

What's the risk-scam if no moola changes hands until bike inspected? Must be something fishy if seller offering to risk shipping expenses. We smell the bait but where's the hook? Anyone biting?

Well there it is ,Thanks Rohan . Same gimmick just a different bike. I guess I shall expect a good faith deposit from a bogus shipping company sometime this week. They are getting more and more creative these scammers.

I figured Rohan was joking,no one is going to send anyone a motorcycle let alone a toaster to a stranger in another country at their expense.
A shipping company is hardly going to ship a motorcycle (or toaster) for free then send a bill once it arrives in a foreign country.

Gimmick ?,no one is stupid enough to fall for that.
Its not real Rohan,no link to some idiot needed.

Repeat
No one would send a motorcycle overseas let alone the next state at their expense to a total stranger.

Sarcasm doesn't always translate well across borders.
It wasn't at all obvious whether you were an idiot, being funny, or sarcastic.
Or where the scam was - hobot is still not sure. !

The pleece in Oz report that they are often having a great deal of trouble convincing folks that they are being scammed.
After having sent their life savings to Nigeria, or Ghana, or wherever....
