I recently used a POR 15 tank sealant treatment on the gas tank from my 68 Triumph. I got a superb result: no leaks. The stuff is incredibly sticky and seemed to get everywhere including the now permanent finger prints on the washing machine and blotches on the tile floor outside the workshop. I had to use a grinder to get the worst of the spill off the floor. Not kidding here. It took three weeks before it was completely off my finger nails.

So, the question is, will this stuff work on a fibreglass gas tank?

Anyone brave enough to try this?

People have used it for that but adhesion to the inside of a glass tank is always questionable and POR-15 doesn't get any better reports about resisting modern fuels as any of the other treatments.

I've used POR-15 on automotive parts and I agree with you that it's fairly bullet proof. There's a spot still on my workshop floor (concrete) that'll never come off.

NO!!!!!!
Don't use POR 15 in fibreglass tanks!
I used it in a new, never had fuel, 6 month old tank.
The agent for POR 15 products in Australia said it was ok in glass tanks,
I prepped the tank as per the instructions.
After 2 weeks there was a split bag of the stuff in the tank which is very hard to get out.
It's a paint, and does not like fibreglass. I wouldn't use it on steel either.
Hirsch has worked for over 3 years now without any problems.
Other POR 15 products are very good, but the tank sealer is crap ( in my opinion)

Is the Hirsh system going to be that much different? I'm thinking its likely the same chemistry marketed differently. Either way, I'd like to seal the tank to prevent any ethanol degradation.

Some have had luck with the Caswell's, but it's a crap shoot from what I've seen. Eventually you'll go to steel or aluminum if you keep it. You can read the threads forever.

I've actually got an Aluminum tank on it now but I thought I'd prep the glass tank as a back up. There's has got to be some coating that will adhere to fibre glass. I'm really surprised POR 15 won't work. It sticks to everything else: even the dog.

I used caswell on my fiberglass tank. It adheres fine from what i've noticed. The biggest thing is rotating the tank to several positions while its drying. I had to do a partial second coat because i missed a spot.

Many threads on this site about applying Caswell correctly...hobot + cmessenk. All I can say is I have 4+ years on my original '69 Dunstall tank, Caswell'd properly w/ no issues.

Especially look at the stuff from jeanr.

Like any sealer/paint it needs very careful preparation. 6-7 years ago I managed to dissolve the stuff we call Petseal over here and got it out after it started to loosen. This time I cleaned the tank really well and the POR15 has been great. It even leaves a really nice looking metallic finish. Also works in oil tanks, sealing a repair I did to the lower end of an Ebay bargain! I think the Petseal would have lasted longer with better cleaning but it is after all just a glassfibre resin and is very brittle.

I can't speak to POR 15's sealer but I can to Caswell and Hirsch. I have an OE glass Roadster tank. It had never been coated with anything. I talked to Bill Hirsch before I used his product and figured it was the way to go. Big mistake. It did not work for me. Bill said that it happens sometimes. Anyway I spent weeks of flushing and using drywall screws to flake and peel it out. Lucky for me I had access to a bore scope so I could see what I was dealing with. After all was out, I used Caswell. Awesome stuff. Do not use any of these other paint like products. Use an entire Caswell kit though. You can't get complete coverage with half a batch like they say.

I'll add that I've had Hirsch in my tank also for about three years and no sign of it breaking down.
