Pop up

I am sorry you find the POPup annoying. If you login it will go away, simply check the box to "Stay logged in".
There are a few reasons behind the POPup and primarily to make sure everyone logs in. The forum does not cost anything. The POPup prevents anonymous browsing so we all know who we are and more importantly I get at least 20 emails a week with users asking me for their password as they cannot see the password reset link on the login page. Now if they are not logged in they can click on that link from the POPup and I hope not to receive these emails any more.

Also since the fraud attack I recently suffered that cost me a lot, I need to keep a better eye on who is using the forum and this is the only way I can do it. On a side note each new member registration is now being scrutinized by me, where as before the new members could simply reply to an auto email to become registered.

Last time I looked it was costing me because I like the OP elected to be a VIP member.
If there are 20 people to stupid to either remember their password or to get their computer to remember it why is that now a problem for everyone else.
Forced to sign in now because of a few numb nuts, nice one.

I am in the process of programming it so VIP members will not see it.
Please note that only the user not logged in will see it at this time, not everyone. Simply check the box to stay logged in.

Merry Christmas

I haven't seen it? But then I'm automatically logged in each time with FF.

Correct, you won't see it then. If you logout and browse the forum it will be there until you login again.
As mentioned I am in the process of programming it so VIP members will never see it. This is taking some doing, but I will have it done soon. I needed to go live with it now as I am tired of hackers and spam bots trolling the forums looking for ways to disrupt my life.

Cheers

How will it know when I am not signed in.
It would be easier to have a program that deletes any profile that sends a PM/email to you with password in the header.

As far as the bogus sign in's.
Perhaps a program can limit their use on the board until a certain post count (10 perhaps) some other sites have 50 post limits for posting in the For Sale Forum.
They are then easy to spot (non Norton content / jibberish) .

what is the big issue with simply logging in and staying that way?

It took me all of 8 seconds to log in.....

The script will have an IF statement that looks to see what groups will be ignored and it will ignore the group in question. Each group has an ID and I need to program this, I am almost done. I thought about what you mentioned and it will not work for 2 main reasons:

1) I am easy to get hold of and nearly always login issues are emailed to me directly. Not by PM. They cannot PM as they cannot login.
2) Login issues are normally from the older community here and I respect these users most. I go out of my way to help these folks, sometimes even call them and I will still do that if need be.

The password recovery issue is only part of this. At this time of the year it s the worst time for hack attempts. Now it seems real people are logging in and learning about commando's to either scam someone or to be a problem as well as post fraud parts for sale. It used to be web bots, but its not now. I have to keep a closer eye on things for a while. They are also trying to gain access to the mailing scripts to send out bulk mail from the mailing scripts, but they fail due to securities that I have in place at the server level, well they can only send so many an hour before I catch them, if they can figure it out, but they have to be a member first and really know some things. I dont want to be on a spam blacklist again. The recent fraud attack made me realize that I am not vigilant enough.

I am sorry for the inconvenience. I will try to get the programming so VIP members dont see it done quickly. I did not realize I would cause such a big problem and thought I was doing a good thing.

EDIT: to answer your question about new users having to post a few posts first to limit board use; I thought that was a great idea to prevent fraudsters alike. I implemented that last year and never heard the end of it so I turned it off. It does work though. I will not try that again.

This site has been great, Keep up with whatever you feel needs to be done. It must be a total pain in the ass to keep ahead of the scammers, Some people just hate change. I think in the long run they will understand.

I (personally) will simply sign in so no inconvenience really.
A case of one for all and all for one when it comes to what is good for the website.

For me personally...........
I find it annoying, but if it prompts more people to sign up, then I am "on the fence".

I usually lurk here and just sign i when I have something that I want to reply to.
Otherwise....... well, I guess I'm gonna have to get used to the annoying popup.

QUESTION:
if I become a VIP member, will I still have to log in every time to make the annoying popups go away?

Wow- the POPup is going viral!

Merry Christmas everyone & Happy Holidays. What are we all doing here on the forum on Christmas eve or day depending on where you are :-)

Merry Christmas Jerry,
just got home from church, marital harmony preserved.
All the best with your plans.

Hey Jerry,

Thanks for hosting this forum. Sorry to hear about the scammers. I only stop by when I'm working on my bikes, but I have not seen the popup and can't imagine it can be that annoying.

As far as why I'm here on Christmas, I'm looking for advice and this is the place to get it.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Greg

Thanks, that's good to know.

Indecently when you login you will see the check box is already auto checked to keep you logged in. There is another check box below that one called "Hide my online status". If you want to do that you have to check that box. The only time this will not work is if you have changed your default browser settings. You will need to login again if you clean the temp internet files/ cookies out of your computer cache- more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie

I am heading out-- Have a great Christmas all

Merry Xmas Jerry, you do a great job and I am here at the moment waiting for the roast pork and roast duck to cook :D I wish all well for the new year and keep riding safe.

Ashley

PS Jerry your bike looks great now just get out and ride it and enjoy it.

I thought the pop up was annoying until I got to this post. as there is clearly a good reason I am happy to log in on each visit.
A very merry Christmas to all, and especially those putting in the time in running this forum. thankyou
ando

The only thing I have ever found anoying are the silly complaints. Jerry doing a stunning job and this is the easiest forum to navigate, the info is invaluable & the only reason I haven't gladly become a VIP is that Ive been busyand not even riding, that's changing & will be signing up soon. Merry X-Mas to all & thanks Jerry for all you do, Glenn.
