Need advice on ring orientation. I am installing new rings on original AE Hepolite pistons . Ring sets are Gandini as supplied by Andover .

The second compression ring - the central of the three between the top compression ring and the oil control ring - has rabbet around the outer edge on one face . Should this rabbet be facing up towards head or down towards crankcase ? I’m thinking down as a scraper but I am uncertain.

Thanks in advance for any input - RT

I'm not familiar with those rings but I'd look real closely for one side to have a "top" marked on it.

I fitted a set of Gandini rings to my commando mk3 and checked the gap at 12 thou. Bedded in beautifully with no smoke and 122 psi cylinder pressure.
Im afraid i can't remember exactly but i think you are right it faces down.

Thanks a bunch- it was indeed marked “ top “ but barely legible to these old eyes - indeed the rabbet goes down
