Upgrading the original BPF main lamp and the pilot lamp to LEDs from Dynamo Regulator Conversions in the UK.
Both new lamps are direct fit, positive earth type and seem to work great. However, the pilot lamp does not seem to make good contact and will not stay lit if I jiggle the housing in the headlight reflector.
There is only one wire to the pilot lamp holder, brown/green. How is it supposed to Earth, through the reflector shell? There is a metallic looking ring around the opening in the glass which might be it's earth contact, but I cannot get reliable flow there with my Ohm meter.spent so time brass brushing that ring, the lamp holder "cage" fingers and even pulled whole headlamp assembly apart to clean the chrome bezel and springs.

Decided to rig a direct earth line from the main lamp holder to the pilot lamp holder...as there is a female bullet connector already on the pilot holder...just no wire to it(!?!).
Worked a treat:

Here is the new main LED about to go into shell...note is does not have any external regulators nor cooling...just a direct replacement BPF.

I have a 70 commando. It has a few differences in it's wiring from later models. It has a 3 position headlight switch were I get
Lights off - daylight bulb only - Headlight and daylight bulb together

There's a ground wire that goes from the fixture that clamps the main bulb in place in the reflector to the headlight shell (like the one pictured below which is a triumph headlight shell) You can see the daylight bulb in the picture too. If you're not getting a good ground on the daylight bulb then add a ground wire to the daylight bulb fixture to the connect it to the headlight shell ground.

I run a positive ground dynamo regulator LED in my headlight and use the normal filliment bulb as my daylight bulb. They work together fine. I also drilled the center indicator light in the headlight shell for an ammeter so I see electrical troubles reflected by the ammeter's needle location. (worth doing IMO)

Edited to add, I see you already figured it out while I was posting... good job.
