Photos of my white '71, plus a few questions...

Hey everyone, I'm excited to say that my bike finished it's travel to California last night!
Today I took some photos, and got to work. I already had the clubman bars, so those went on first. Have a new K&N to fit, but after the carbs come back from the shop (local Brit bike shop is sorting them out for me)
So, on to the pics!











So here's how she sits now, pulled off the tank, (metal one, and never drained) got the new battery, and drained the oil from the oil tank.
Plus many more odds and ends...



This bike does not have a oil drain plug on the crank case. I see that it has a "crankcase gauze strainer" and I'm assuming the remaining oil will come out when I remove it? Is that How I change the oil properly?


What is a good way to clean the filter in the oil tank?
And the best way to clean the gas tank? Acetone and bolts and alot of shaking?
I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I get ready to start up for the first time. Mainly wanted to share these photos, I think she's going to turn out great!
Any more tips are much appreciated!

Bike looks cool. There should be a drain plug foward of the strainer plug. On my 850 it's just out of sight on the last pic to the left. But these guys know thier shit on the nortons and will help you out. Where in Kalifornia are you?

Hey, I'm up in Santa Barbara, but my family lives in Laguna Beach.
I bought a truck in Temecula once...Ya I'm pretty pleased with it's condition, just have to get it sorted now- I plan to ride it alot.

It should have a drain plug, but I couldn't find one!

What on earth?? I'll have to snap some pictures and post them up tomorrow...
Any Idea where it is/how to drain the crank case oil on a '71?

It has 10,361 miles on it.

NO a '71 will not have a small drain plug in the crankcase. Remove the sump plug and the crankcase will drain. Clean the gauze strainer. You can remove the strainer in the oil tank by simply removing the large "banjo" bolt in the rear of the oil tank . That has the strainer attachedl.

I see the tank has been replaced with a steel one. Are you trying to remove rust or just old gas/varnish? If you are just trying to remove the residue of old gas, I'd rinse it with several portions of fresh gas and maybe some mineral spirits (stoddard solvent). Using acetone or lacquer thinner risks damaging the paint.

If the tank is rusty, plan on lining it. Then you will need to use acetone or lacquer thinner and handfull of drywall screws, chain, etc. Make sure your wrap the tank with plastic wrap and aluminum foil and duct tape all edges to protect the paint as these solvents will damage the finish if spilled.

So far I've:
Changed the oil, cleaned the tank strainer/filter and the one in the crankcase.
Changed the gearbox oil, new platinum plugs, rebuild the carbs, got a K&N, bought new fuel line, and inline filters, new petcocks, new battery, and some spit and polish!
