I need to remove the rear rubber mounting from the tank to investigate petrol weep. It seems fairly solid and don't want to shear the rubber ! I have new ones but don't want to damage anything. Anyone had problems or do I risk twisting with fingers crossed 🤞. Roy.
 
If its the rubber bobbin type rather that the stud with rubber washers then you need to unscrew it using the flat washer with integral stud on the top of the rubber bobbin closest to the tank, that way all the strain is on the metal. Trying to get something in there to grip on the metal of the washer will be the difficult job and it will lose grip easily so protect the paintwork. Using the outer stud on the bobbin just shears the rubber off the flat washer but gives you more access to the top washer with integral stud if it shears off the right one.

The old ones will have hard rubber which could have caused the current leak, use the new ones when you put it back together.

A CAREFUL use of a sharp, small chisel on the edge of the "washer" part of the rubber mount usually get them going.

If you are unsure, get help from an accomplished mechanic.
 
What I thought, improvisation again. Also the new stud and washers for the front mounting don't seem correct. In the parts manual it states 8 rubber washers required for a roadster. 10 for a hi rider ? Is there a shorter stud ? Or as I'm going to , use as requ'd ! What am I missing ? Roy. On the rear bobbins use a needle nose vice grip, aka mole grip on the outer metal part of the bobbin. As I recall the front studs are standard 5/16 inch studs, you should be able to source shorter ones from any hardware store.
 
Don't be too worried about splitting the rubber on the bobbin has I have had to cut them apart in the past, you can still get the threaded part out with vice grips or if you are lucky enough to get the side of the bobbin thread with the hex nut exposed you can use a spanner to remove it from the tank.

Never sure about the number listed but I use four on the stud, put tank in place, one more under, then the fender washer and finally a full-height NyLock nut. Generally, I tighten until the stud is even with the bottom of the nut. So, that's 10 in front. I use a bobbin in back with the Roadster strap.

BTW, the picture at AN shows 10 but lists 8.

Yes, those studs caused my inserts in the front of my Interstate tank to start leaking, you really only get the benefit of the single rubber washer under the penny washer. All my tanks now use bobbins front and if needed at the back.
 
Gives another avenue of thought. I have siliconed washers together. Also plenty rubber foam pads for the tunnel. Surely if I can mount it securely and move it, slightly, in all directions It could be OK??
