I've looked some but not yet found an assortment of photos from the rear for MK3s with Peashooters.

I have mine mounted up the the original set of OEM balanced pipes. The setup splays out the end of the mufflers, appearance wise slightly more so on the left side. If I pulled the pipe out enough to match left to right, the pipe would cover up the primary drain bolt. Even the rubber mounts show that there is some sort of splay action going on. What I am wondering is this an effect of using the original pipes, a MK3 thing, normal, or ???

Not sure how much the photo below will help you see the issue (lousy cell phone pic).

If peashooters are used with standard Mk3 pipes then it does splay the peashooters and mounting rubbers slightly.

I have the same balance pipe/peashooter arrangement on my own Mk3 but I don't consider the splay to be excessive or particularly noticeable and it hasn't caused any problems. The left side mounts being splayed slightly more than on the right.

Viking makes a Mk3 "peashooter" balance pipe set NZ$495.00

Keep on hand extra Lord's rubber isolator mounts to replace as splay gradually fractures through and may want to diddle the spacers behind Z plates to lessen the loads on the temporary rubber hangers. Primary drain plug is just for looks as don't drain the primary and it too high to use as oil level indicator.

Thanks. Doesn't bother me, just didn't know if I did something wrong or was a circumstance of the equipment. I was hoping for a solution that tucked up tighter, akin to the black caps, but this is easy enough on the eyes to live with.

The amount of splay your photo shows certainly isn't severe and, I'm sure, looks just fine but I know what you mean about the black caps. I still have them on my mk2a (although I no longer have my original pipes with balance tube). I must admit I'm partial to the look of the black caps fitting closer than the peashooters - mine are essentially parallel to the rear wheel - but that's just me. I guess it's a carry-over from coming of age in the early sixties and salivating over all those sweet old British twins and their muffler arrangement.

I went to the older down pipes for my Mark 3 with peashooters, but the splay didn't bother me, I just don't like balance pipes. I balance the idle between cylinders feeling the exhaust pulses and the balance pipe screws that up. Yeah, I know I am really old fashioned.
