Hi folks,
I modified my existing coil bracket to accommodate an RGM dual fire coil. It so happens there is the perfect amount of space beside the coil to mount the Pazon Sure Fire ignition module.
Will having the coil and the module nestled up against each cause any interference to the Pazon I.M?
A small neuron in the back of my brain keeps telling me this is a bad idea.
I have emailed Pazon but they probably won't get round to replying by Monday and I'd like to pop this in this weekend.

Pazon proximity to coil

How far is too close? I have the Pazon lying flat on the bracket between the two stock coils.
Would it be the magnetic field of the energized coil that is the worry?

According to the instructions that came with my Pazon Smartfire, the coils or coil should not be mounted close to the Pazon ignition module.

Ya can follow the standard cautions of those who ain't tested this close proximitry or test it and tell us if its a bother of not to clean up your view. If it does miss fire or fail then may still be able to get away with it by wrapping a few heat conduting alu foil layers around or just one side of brain box - spayed black to conceal your tin foil hat protection.

The Smart-Fire is digital and a completely different animal. I'd guess the analog Sure-Fire is OK. I'm using one on my Matchless and the box is right next to the coil. If you have doubts, shield the box with a grounded metal barrier between it and the coil but I doubt you will need it.

From the Sure-Fire instructions:

"Find a suitable place for the ignition module, preferably near to the ignition coils. Secure the ignition module to the frame using one or more large cable ties. An adhesive mounting base is provided; this can be affixed to the underside of the module and the cable tie passed through and around the module and frame."

Mine did not come with the said mounting base.

What the worse that could happen, back fires, no starts - retarded spark that blows the head off or just a bit of plastic melt odor? I bet it'd work w/o faraday cage. Has anyone but me tried or forced to run with no R plug or leads or caps on analog or digital sparker?

I do not. The Sure-Fire instructions say NGK 5K resistor caps are recommended but not required. It also states proper plugs for the machine in good order do not need to be changed.

This semi implies the Sure-Fire ain't that static sensitive so 'brain' may work fine next to the coil. Neat installs is definitely part of Commando hobby so hope it works out with or w/o sheilding so others might smile at the non Norton concealment too.

Andy from Pazon has recommended the unit not be located directly beside the coil as heat will transfer to the Ignition Module as well as electrical interference.
I'll move it away. The electrical interference can be solved by moving the unit, however if I fry it with heat it would necessitate a replacement unit. Best to be safe than sorry.

Was Andy talking about heat exposure and interference with the particular coil and location as in the picture or for coils in general?

Scott

Scott,
Andy was talking in general terms. I did not send him the picture of my setup.
