Hey guys,

Nearly finished another bike of mine, and had an idea to put up a thread that hopefully saves some disappointment. I'm sure most of you have been in the same boat as me where you buy something brand new with the expectation of it working fine, and somehow you end up putting on a 40+ year old part that's snottier than a 4 year old kid's hand back on the bike. Mainly referring to pattern or other "direct replacement parts" that end up being complete junk.

For me, a few off the top of my head:
- EMGO repro pull throttles. The feel is super sloppy on some of them and the adjustment setup is interesting to say the least.
- Those stupid plastic 2-1 cable pull converters. Hate the cheapness, fitment and function of the new ones. Found that out of 3, 2 couldn't accept doherty cables or the originals in them.
- Doherty Throttle/Choke Cables: Found that the newer ones had to have a bunch of flash removed from the ends that go into the cable box in order to work.
- Cheap versions of the original petcocks. If I wanted a petcock that leaks like a sieve, I'd have just stuck with the older ones!

List goes on, but I figure I'd get the ball rolling!

Armours exhaust pipes for my BSA A10. Really crappy fit.

Alphabet 2 into1 exhaust ( near took me down)

Alton e start( most expensive workshop decoration ever)

Half of everything I ever bought off fleabay.( I don't drink ,but if I did at least I would have an excuse)

If any body wants to get great cash for their old bust parts, just drop me a line sucker@shitbits.com

What happened to your alton electric start? ,,,,,,,,,,,,baz

Alton e start( most expensive workshop decoration ever)

yes, what happened?

did you buy it and then not install it, if so why did you change your mind?

is it now for sale?

Norvil belt drive not bad in the end but took three months to get the right parts,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,baz

bought Progressive Fork springs years ago

aggravated the already too stiff stock forks

took em out, put stock springs back in, I might have thrown the progressives away.....

Baz ref electric start

Had it fitted about two years ago and then had probs with top end and gearbox. It had only been used about ten or twelve days , when the bike was back together (I was the mechanic) the motor gears broke up think it was due to the shock absorber, but alton never said so not sure.but it took about twelve weeks to get it sorted and by that time the old girl was starting first kick cold ,so no need for starter.

Parts you regret buying

As it's a 69 it needed a starter button ,which is still on ,it's funny watching people looking for the starter unit!
Parts you regret buying

You can just see the marks in the case where the drive gear chunks jammed and the old shocker(on the right) new shock and gear on left.
1up 3down , no it is not for sale as it is untried and just in case it's a pup or not. I don't want somebody else posting it on this thread.

the rings stop the nut from coming off but dont stop the nut from coming loose so it chatters the thread away as you ride ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,baz

ahhh, I know the rings you're talking about! I just lockwired them, but I have a set of the rings you mention! Now I know better =P

Also have more norton bits to add to that list:
- Aftermarket headlight ears and O-rings. Don't even begin to bother, they either rattle a lot or are nearly impossible to fit.
- Fork bottom steel steel bushing, got an ebay type kit, don't fit at all, had to turn them down a touch with a mandrel to give adequate clearance
- Chinese "progressive" shocks (the ones with two springs with a separator). Damping is alright, but the rates are not right at all, and the "progressive bit" is very under damped. Might need to eat more for those
- EMGO cast headlight ears: the collars they give are absolutely terrible, ended up having to make a set to reach intermediate sizes.
