As some of you know I just recently bought a 73 750 and have been cleaning it up a bit. While the frame is getting powder coated I'm trying to clean up the wheels a bit. These things are terrible! There is rust everywhere. What I'm thinking about doing is cleaning off the rust then paining the wheels, spokes, and hubs all at once. Has anyone ever done this? What kind of results did you get? I know this isnt the proper way to do things, but it's just temporary. I have a 2nd set of wheels getting powder coated and will eventually lace up and use those. This is where I got the idea from. Seems like they turn out okay?

I guess it's a question of just how "temporary" this is gonna be.
He says in the blog that he sands between primer coats, then later that he uses 60 and 320 grit. I cannot really imagine sanding all those surfaces..Is he sanding all the spokes and the nipples, or just the wheel edges? And no good results can be expected by jumping from 60 to 320 grit, skipping 5 steps in between.
Are you planning to strip that paint off the hubs, spokes, and nipples to re-use them?
Seems to me a lot of work to paint and then remove the paint, for a short term "good" look. If you are going to the trouble and expense of powder-coating yr frame, I'd expect you'll want new spokes and nipples for lacing up your second wheel set, so that leaves the hubs. If I were planning to re-use the hubs, I'd skip the whole paint job. If your new wheel set has their own hubs, then maybe it's not such a crazy idea.
