Laughing at the "breather pipe" poked out the rear ??????... Spitting his "vapours" out onto the road for the bloke behind... Couldnt afford that extra weight of a catch can..

I had to laugh at his boot, one more lap and he'll be filing his toe nails!
FE.

Some early Ducatis had a large diameter breather pipe with a rubber flap attached. The catch can was introduced for Historic racing.

look at almost any picture of Mike Hailwood riding a bike from the mid-1960s the extent to which he ground his boots……………………………

Ok, since you mentioned Mike the bike, here's a story from Dave Degans... Degans was wearing through his boots in his early days too, he asked Mike how come he went so fast yet his boots were unscathed "I get through a new right boot every 2 meetings" he replied. That's not a big problem when your Dad runs one of the biggest bike dealers around. Degans Dads answer was to fibre glass his boot and paint it black. Degans said it seemed to work a treat for the first few turns, then the glass got hot and burnt his toes! From then on he tuckd his toes up out of the way, and that became his permanent style!
So there you go!

I watched Hailwood ride a manx at Winton Raceway in the 70s. In those days we'd just got gumball rubber tyres and the go was to hang off the bike to keep the bike more vertical. Mike did none of that, he sat comfortably upright, and was simply extremely smooth and fast without leaning the bike too much. - PERFECTION ! - Personally I couldn't understand what the fuss was about - it looked so easy.
This is another guy who also showed us how it is done:

And NOBODY noticed that radial Caliper spacer bracket & is the disc centre lightened with oles . :? Presumeably if the calipers further out , the discs larger Dia .
THOUGH it Could Be a early development that the 70 on production version dimensionally equalled Without the caliper spacer bracket .
Or Something .
:x

Funny you should say that as I always read the same and photos of riders of the time support the fact that they are not cranked over at 60+ degrees like today. However, I am reading an autobiography by a well known UK frame builder where he states he had to provide extra ground clearance on a Hailwood frame as Mike leaned to extreme angles.
I'd hazard a guess that as well as his smooth style he probably did get through corners a little quicker with a degree or two more lean.

It was about that time that we started fitting 18 inch wheels to manxes to use the new rubber, as well as changing the handling, it reduced the ground clearance.

You also seem to forget that Hailwood had on the market his own branded motorcycle boots that had a Zip at the rear-these were a curse as they wore a hole in every pair of shocks that I wore :!: :(
