I have an 1973 850 with a frame stamping, 00104, I wonder if its something the factory did? The bike was made in March 1973 a 1973 850.Look for number 00104 on the left side next to the data plate.

Frames from 1973 commonly have that 5-digit number beginning "001" (the other two numbers change) although it may be hidden by the certification plate.
The reason for this marking is as yet unknown-but could be a factory production or inspection code marking.

very interesting, notice the "28" down low

Yes, I can see the "2" but once again I can't offer any explanation as to what the number is supposed to represent-but it's probably another production stamp that meant nothing to anyone outside the Norton (or Verlicchi) factory.

If it was stamped by hand with individual number punches then whoever did it was very good. I make jet engine shafts and each must be stamped with its own unique serial number by hand an nobody i know can stamp that neatly on a curved surface. I just mentioned this as someone who routinely stamps serial numbers which change like those on your bike i appreciate who hard is to make them look neat.

Adding I've got a bent 850 frame in the garage with 12/73 date. It has 00121 stamped in this spot.

yes I agree that it would be very hard to hand stamp anything that neat.

Nov 73 frame, Italian built going by 25mm tube, stamped 00122 very neatly and also deeply so machine applied (fly press ?) block stamp.

Mine is June 1973 - 00113.

Mostly sure it’s a Verlicchi frame with a 25mm tube. My caliper proved difficult to get up & under the tank. ☝️

One theory I have heard is it is a batch number on Verlicchi frames.

Also my swing arm is stamped 00112

A swingarm stamp is something that (I think) has not been mentioned before so could you say where it is please, then perhaps our other members can check if their Commando's swingarm has a similar stamp mark?
