Hi

I recently bought a norton commando 1971 in parts. The electrical system seems to be modified, does not match the wiring diagram for this model. How can you find out if it is + or - earth? Most of the wiring is disconnected.

Wondering also if anyone is familiar with this:
Lucas O.P.U.S Ignition
Amplifier unit
AB5 type.
12V Neg. Earth

Is it the same as Rita AB5? Does the Rita also have negative earth?

it depends on what parts you have for the charging circuit. if you still have the zener diode and rectifier than it is + earth if you have another regulator/rectifier most can can be wired either way and so can most electronic ignitions.

I have seen that there are both + and - grounded zener diodes. Is it enough to replace zener diode and rectifier to build a negative ground system?

if you have to buy new parts or want to chang it to - earth than you would be better off with one of the reg/rectifier units. like I stated if it has the zener it is + earth as I don't think some one would change it to - earth using a zener

From what I've seen Lucas did make some negative ground rectifiers and zener diodes late in the game but as was said if you wanted to do a conversion a $50 Podtronics (or similar) unit would be simpler and less expensive
