71 up, on the back panel of the oil tank at the front, the panel has a formed indentation or recess obviously for clearance for something, can anyone tell me why its like this and if its necesary, the reason I ask is I'm making an alloy oil tank and wont bother with this special shape if its not really necessary, its no problem to include it but if I dont have to all the better.

well it will certainly have a drain plug, and 2" flip up Monza cap. no sidecover needed, I'll probably make an alloy side cover for the left side to match.

I noticed that the weded in fitting for the big banjo bolt is welded in at an angle, The only reason I see for this is to either give some clearance to the return line or make it easier to fit a spanner. any clues?

I'm not sure who made your alloy oil tank but I cant see how a welded in boss sor the drain plug could be a weak point, the mounting points would be more of a concern, a point which I'm addressing on my tank

you made your tank your self, the mountings broke, problem with the drain plug etc , these problems that you incurred seem to be at your own doing, I'm sure if I address these issues as I have anticipated making the tank in alloy then I dont forsee any issues with manufacture, I'm very experienced in manufacture of aluminum parts for Commando's , Tanks, Sidecovers, Rearsets, Fork yokes etc

well my idea was to manufacture a replacement tank in alloy where the owner would not have to change or route his oil lines, He would be able to bolt the alloy tank straight in, using all the original hardware, hoses etc.

I'm sure owners would rather undo a drain plug to drain their oil than find some kind of vacuum system to get the oil out.
surely owners realize that they have to drain the tank and expect a provision to do so,

yes thats a good idea for a one off. I will make a doubler plate on which the thicker bracket will be welded to, this ensures that there is no cracking at the tank and with a thicker than original steel bracket will prevent the failure of the original design,

You know I can't help but feel that half the problems with the lower oil tank mount breakages are due to the position of the drain plug. Undoing it and doing it up after an oil change must put a massive amount of strain on the fracture prone lower mount. It's a big nut that needs to be done up pretty tight and all that force must be transferred to the lower mount, trying to twist it sideways till eventually it breaks. Damn!

"And a 2" monza cap at the original location ?? forget it .."

Why is that Ludwig??

thanks for that, it looks more like it was made to accommodate the breather hose or hoses coming from the top of the tank .

the rear air filter plate is forward more than 1/2" of the front of the oil tank, so the small relief at the front of the oil tank is obviously for the breather hose as i suspected.

Using hex style weld in bungs allows you to put a wrench on the bung so you don't have to stress the area that the bung is welded to for tightening and loosening. Use them on my aluminum gas tank for petcock bung as well.

Since no one answered your question....the indentation allows space for the breather rubber pipe connected at one end to the oil filler neck, top of the tank and the other end to the back of the air filter rear case.

Thanks David, thats what I thought it must be for. here is my alloy tank with Monza cap.
