What is the rate of return to the top of the tank via the breather hose?
I seem to recall a post from someone saying it was pulsing or for want of a better explanation, oil then nothin then oil like squirts.

The breather hose is not intended for returning oil to the tank, it's for reducing pressure in the crankcase.
If you mean the oil return from the scavenge side of the oil pump, Jim Comstock described it as "squirts of oil mixed with pockets of air" when giving advice on another thread.
This is because a properly functioning oil pump has much greater flow capacity on the scavenge side than the supply side, so it BLASTS oil back to the tank and then has to wait for more oil to accumulate in the crankcase.

Thought I remembered that recently but couldn't find it via the search engine and couldn't remember which thread.

I couldn't remember the thread when I wrote that reply;
It was "pre installation of comnoz sump breather".
It contains good information - as usual with Jim.

The Combat breather hose is definitely designed to function as major oil return when front case drain allows wet sumping on the fly or wet sumped sitting up. Then will see solid pencil thick jet of oil for half a min. till sump pumped down, then the spitting air-oil of the oil pump meager return. Takes machine work inside to make a Combat breather just a pressure relief oil less return. If taking engine apart definitely source some non melting non synthetic thread or floss laid in seams. I like Hylomar myself but many others work as well.

Sorry I got that wrong.
It was "post installation of comnoz sump breather - 71 Norton"
