here we go again. just my 3 cents worth. as i stated in my earllier posts, i suddenly was experiencing the same type of oil weeping problem, but not as bad as you described, as i fixed the tach drive a long time ago. i put in a motormite after getting the info on this forum, and was very pleased with the results. but, i still had a small leak at left hand exhaust rocker cover. not as bad as before the motormite, but still there when running the bike hard. drove me crazy. anyway, i discovered the studs were a little loose, so i replaced them with allen head bolts. when replacing them, i discovered via mag light a small hole in the head where the bottom stud had punched through, i'm sure due to overtightening on my part. the oil was weeping up the threads and out. a little jb weld cured the problem. as hobot said, overtightening can cause many problems, especially with mk111 thin castings.

To prevent more wear to the all ready stressed threads during routine maintenance, perhaps reverting back to the studs and Loctite in place. The Loctite will seal up the threads and stop the leaks too.

MkIII thin castings???

Yep and porous head castings too. There's a special paint sealer I learned about from the poor MKIII owners.

I'd shun JBW on rocker studs as eventually their outer threads my go away, so I'm with the locktite crowd there. Allen head screws are anew idea to me and may do that on Peel, thanx.

I've always understood the MkIII castings were the thickest (and strongest) of them all.

I had always thought the porous problem was confined to Mk1 & Mk2's. Oh well.

Button head Allens would look good on the covers with a nice washer. UNF will work too unless you don't want to mess up the WW.
