Oil leak on 2013 Sport

I have a 2013 Comando Sport. During the running in period to the first service, I had no oil problems. After it was serviced at the dealer (500 miles) I had an small oil leak so I retuned it to the dealer. He replaced the O ring on the bottom of the motor and tested it and everything was fine. When I was driving home I could smell oil smoke so I knew it was leaking again! At one red light smoke was pouring from the engine block. I made it home safely without the engine light coming on.

I lost quite a bit of oil on my garage floor and I had my girlfriend to sit on the bike to keep it centered while I lay on the ground trying to determine the source. The oil continued to drip about 15 minutes after the bike had stopped and it appeared to be coming from where the oil pump is bolted the engine. I was difficult to determine the precise source because the oil was new and clear. I dont have a torque wrench but I checked the allen bolts and they were all "snug."

I will be trailering it back to the dealer after the weekend, but I would appeciate to hear if anyone has had similar problems.

1. The leak only appeared after the 500 mile service

2. The leak only appears after the bike has run for 20 minute or so at highway speed.

3. The leak continues to drip for at least 20 minutes after the bike has stopped and since the engine is now totally covered in oil it is difficult to precisely determine the source.

Re: Olie leak on 2013 Sport

Oil filter changed and new one not adequately tightened?
Seems likely that something untoward occurred during the service.

My buddies 961 Cr had his oil filter cover on up side down after his first service, it is very easy to do, there is even a caution about it on the you tube vid. Next time I change my oil I am going to mark the cover. My friend did not ride his bike that way so we don't know how bad it would have leaked!

Thanks for the advice. Some things to check out.

I don't have a torque wrench so I simply checked to see if the bolts were loose or no. They were not.

I just dropped it off to the dealer a few hours ago by trailer! He said I can have it back to you in few hours. I said No!!! Get it back to me when you have fixed the problem! Keep it for a few days if you need to. Take it for a high speed test drive of at least 15-20 minutes! Then when you have it back in the condition I gave it to you in, give me a call!

I told the Head Mechanic, The Service Manager, The Sales Manager, The Owner and the owner's father (who's used to race Nortons and who happened to be in the building) of the problem. Most of them looked supremely bored with my problem!

I will give you an update when I get the bike back.

Norton is air-freighting some parts to Toronto. The Norton rep will bring them to Ottawa from Toronto and supervise the repair himself. The sevice manager didn’t know what parts were involved because it was his mechanic that spoke to Norton. He suspects it may be a new oil pump.

I won't have any news until July 16

My oil leak problems seem to have been solved.

The Norton Tech and the mechanic at the dealer worked on the bike and determined that the oil was leaking out where the starter was bolted on to the motor. Apparently when the motor was assembled, one of the washers/gaskets where the starter motor is attached to the motor got pinched. The problem didn't appear until about 600 miles when the vibration from the motor was enough to open up a small opening between the starter and the main block. They removed the starter and re-installed it and it seems fine!

The mechanic took it for a test drive and all was good. I just completed a 1/2 hour test drive at 60-70 mph and I let the bike sit for 1/2 hour and no drips. Al seems good now!!!

:D

It just won't be a Norton unless you had at least one good oil leak that had to be fixed. Sounds like you are have the full nostalgic Norton experience to me! Happy trails!
