While adjusting the chain on my 71 Commando I noticed that the rear wheel was clunking and not moving directly with the chain.
Upon inspection the cushions between the drum and wheel are completely gone. That pretty much ruined my riding today.
I pulled the wheel and its pretty much of a mess. The bike is a barn find and I am slowly working through it.
It needed a tire anyway, and the bearings seem to be mostly trashed. More work and $ ahead. At least I found it before something bad happened.
I cant believe there was no damage to the hub or pins that fit to them. Lucky in that respect.

I'd take this as a sign from above to not ride this bike until you've at least been through all the basic safety related mechanics.

Absolutely. The rear wheel is off and will be rebuilt. I have been through most of it but of course funds dictate what gets done. Safety first. After seeing this, the front wheel and tire are next. Brake inspection included.
Its hard to leave it sit now that the engine is fresh and running.

Keep in mind that it isnt a car where when you break down you call the hook and then face the bill.
With a bike you pay now or pay more later and a good deal more later esp if you have to pay the
hospital bill.
Be rigorous about this. At worst it ensures the bike and you will make it back to the shed intact
after having a fine ride.
