Not so funny oil

Grandpaul was right. Should have parked it.

Sorry for the big pics. Trying Imgur. Photobucket seems to going down the drain.

Re: No so funny oil

Ouch,
I guess we know where the metal was coming from now....

Re: No so funny oil

I guess we do.

What do you think, a little JB Weld and it will be good as new?

And there's no one else I would want to touch it.

SO...a rod let go?

If you are in the Seattle area I might have an extra crank and rods and maybe cases.

Dunno what exactly happened but you're probably right.

Thanks for the offer. My fantasy would be to have Jim patch up the hole, salvage the crank and pop some lightweight pistons in. Need to go check my lottery ticket first.

Bugger Dave, that is not ideal!

Apologies for being one of those that said it should be fine!

However, I did also say that with the caveat that there were no untoward noises or other symptoms of things being wrong.

We're there no other warnings Dave? No knocking or rumbling or whatever??

Sorry to see that as one of the not so few who has been there and done it but didnt have any warning. Mine made a bigger hole though  Best of luck with the rebuild and hope you get it back together. Someone will come up with parts.

An oil pressure guage likely would have given no indication of the impending failure in this case.

The only indication was the debris in the oil.

I've been on lots of forums for lots of years, and know lots of people with both Triumphs and Nortons, and IT SEEMS the Nortons tend to blow holes in the cases far more frequently, Triumphs seem to seize up instead...

And I thought that oil was an April Fools joke

So sorry Dave...this is not good :(

Just yesterday I had an old roto-tiller engine do the same thing..... and I uttered quite a few bad words.
I can only imagine what you were saying.

As much as it sucks right now, It's not the end , it can be fixed.

I'm sure the big pics are not Photobuckets fault. What was your camera set at and what size did you upload? I always have to use the edit feature to crop and resize.

I guess you'll just have to slum it on the Duc for a while. As far as April fools goes, well, you're just going to have to own that one.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry that happened .... hope you get back up and running as soon as you want .... positive thoughts headed your way ...

It was running great. Sounded awesome. I did notice a slight sound at one point, like a cable tapping but it was super faint and hard to tell where it was coming from. No knocking or anything ominous. Plus at 60-ish mph there are a lot of loud noises. Then BOOM.

I was on a freeway at 5pm that is usually crowded and there was no one around. Pulled the clutch and coasted to the side. Party over man, party over.

One party over Dave... A new one just beginning...!

This is at least a chance to upgrade things internally. No need to go beserck, but if pistons and rods need replacing anyway, then buying upgraded stuff is a relatively small extra cost.

Hopefully you pulled the clutch in quick enough to limit the damage internally and, with luck, you'll be able to ascertain what went wrong. Sometimes it is impossible to tell between cause and effect amongst the shrapnel !

My main man, Swoosh,

Consider this is a badge of honor very few achieve. And when they do, they often have a big headache (or worse) afterwards. You'll get it back, better than ever.

BUMMER! Well, I guess this rules out the "it's only bubbles in your oil" theory. Let us know what initially failed if you can figure it out.
